    Default Kuhlis vs. Dwarf Chains

I am to the "planning the stocking" stage of my 55 gallon Asia tank. Need some bottom feeders. Looking at a school (6-10) of either kuhlis or dwarf chain loaches.

This is a planted tank, plenty of rocks, caves, and driftwood, gravel over bentonite/soil substrate. Planned tank-mates include schools of zebra danios and pentazona barbs, a couple dwarf gouramis, a red tail black shark, and two or three bamboo shrimp. Maybe a few snails, if they would survive the onslaught.

I have never kept loaches before, but my research tells me that kuhlis and chains are both really cute, interesting personalities, good cleaners, good schooling bottom feeders...

So, which do I choose? Opinions?

I've never kept dwarf chains but I can tell you kuhli loaches are great fish. They are amazing in larger groups, I had 22 in a tank at one point. At feeding time they would drop out of plants and slip out from in and under rocks and driftwood. It was great fun. A group of them liked to hang out under a plant in the front corner. A group of 8-10 might still be a bit shy in your tank. They aren't a large bio-load fish and you have room with the footprint of a 55g to get more. I would put 12-15 kuhlis in there and watch their antics. A good number of my group were always out tumbling over each other and scurrying around the tank.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

Get the DC's, they are always "out front" and will swim in all regions, where the Kuhlis spend alot of time hiding. But if you get a big group like Mommy suggested it will encourage them to be out and about more.

Dang we posted at the same time again.

If it were me, I'd get the Kuhlis only because I'm poor. Hahaha.

Yeah, kuhlis seem cheaper, and unfortunately that might be the deciding factor. Seems like kuhlis are more of a true bottom feeder, while chains are all over the place. Chains are smaller, more beautiful, and cuter, IMO; kuhlis are more different and probably have more interesting behavior. It's a really tough call.

I guess there's only one logical solution: Upgrade to a 150g tank and get both. My wife might not like that plan, though. Neither would my mortgage company. Some people just aren't open to logic.

I vote Dwarf Chains if you can afford it. I got lucky with mine and managed to get them for 3 for $25. They are VERY active, which is why I'm so happy I chose this species for my 55g. The zebra loaches I had kept in my 55g can't even compare to these, but all loaches are still very sociable and fun to keep.

Kulhis seem very fun as well, but I'm pretty sure dwarf chains are more active than them.

So, how big DO kuhlis get? All the ones I've seen have been quite small, but I've seen a couple youtube vids where they look fairly massive. I want to go for small bottom feeders so I can get a bunch of them.

I'm also considering two-spot catfish, if I can find some. But I should probably start a different threat about that...

I have kept (and am keeping kuhlis) They get about 4 inches long and slightly fatter than your average pencil as a max range size.
