    for what it's worth…
My Betta is in a 3.5gal tank, moss ball, and an ivory snail named Gary. He seems very happy and I check the levels weekly and do partial water changes once a week.
I never let the ammonia get above .25 ppm in his tank. I also underfeed him so ammonia does not build up any faster.
    water stays around 78-80 degrees.
He even likes facing the gentle flow of the filter after following Gary around the glass.

    now for the *gasp* moment
My Betta tank was not cycled..But then again that was months ago when I knew nothing about cycling until I bought a 10gal tank and wondered why a goldfish didn't make it….which led me to this site…Looking back, if I knew about cycling then, I would have cycled the Betta tank as well.

I think what you are trying to do is a noble thing and should be applauded..

You missed my point, or maybe I wasn't clear. Lots of people make the mistake of not cycling a tank when they are new. The OP knew the tank should be cycled. I don't even mind cycling with fish, but it does have to be done correctly. Correctly is lots of water changes, not putting the fish in an uncycled tank and then leaving for vacation. The OP should have waited until he got back from vacation to buy the fish so he could give it the proper care it needs. Like I said, unless you are very experienced, impulse buys usually end badly, maybe this is one that will end ok and the fish will live a couple years.

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I totally got your point moms. I just wanted to share my experience with the OP…and that I was probably one of the lucky ones to have a successful uncycled tank.
He will have to vigilant and dedicated in his care.

I think most of our spouses think we are at least a little crazy, my husband uses the word obsessed a lot for some reason.

HA! That's exactly what I tell my husband when he starts in with the obsessed word.

In my case it's not "obsessed"....it's "obsessive", with two other words, in a phrase

There's an acronym for it, can't recall what it is just now...

    OCD?????

I guess I don't understand how a betta is different from other fish and doesn't need a cycled tank just because the tank is small. The smaller the tank, the more vigilant you have to be with maintenance.

Sorry, but putting the fish in an uncycled, small tank and leaving for vacation is very irresponsible.
