  1. Default Paul's in Wyoming journal

Some of you may remember me from a couple months ago where I lost an entire aquarium to disease. At the time of that incident I had just finished setting up a second tank.

The 29 gallon is still empty. This tank will have a dwarf gourami. My 3 year old picked out that kind of fish. I haven't quite figured out what else will go in the tank yet though. Tank is filtered with an ac50 and tetra30. Tank is now cycled, so order being placed on Monday I think.

My other tank is a 26 gallon bow front. It has 4 neons and 4 emperor tetras. Filtration on this tank is a fluval 306 and an ac50. The neons were the first addition. That was all the store had. I planned on adding more, but my dad had surgery for cancer, that didn't go well. I ended up in ohio for a month. The four neons thankfully did just fine while I was gone for a month.

Upon our return, I added 4 emperors. I was planning to add more but the store was so incompetent that we gave up. It took them an hour to catch the 4 ... During which one was dropped on the floor and another had a wound from a blue crayfish. Two weeks later now and they are doing good. The injured ones wound is not visible. All you can see is that his dorsal is thinner than normal and his bottom fin has a slice in it. Melafix worked wonders on the injured emperor.

Now planning on placing an order with tws since my local store is so bad in help now. I plan to finish out my neons to 14 and the emperors to 10. I also want to add some sort of Corys to the bottom.

No idea if anyone else will read my journal, but thought I'd give this a shot for my own benefit.

    Paul

Don't you just love those fish store people these days? Good choice on the Emperors BTY, one of my favorites. Glad to see your back and started a journal .

I really like them. Have three males and one female at the moment.

    Here is the tank.

With 14 neons and 10 emperors, you're at the top already for stocking even before the cories. I'd maybe drop the emperors to 7, and then stick with one of the smaller cories, like panda cories. While this is just a guide, take a look here and play around with some of the numbers: http://www.aqadvisor.com/

Wow, that really is a bad experience. You would think they would at least know how to catch the fish. I'll be reading your journal and looking forward to the progress.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

As someone who works at a LFS, I am appalled. How can it take that long to catch 4 emperor tetras? And dropping one...that is ridiculous. I have had exactly two fish ever hit the ground on my watch. Both which jumped out of the tank while I was getting other fish. That being said I really like your 26 gallon. The tall style is awesome. In my fish keeping career two of the tanks I have enjoyed having the most (my 25g and my 70g) were tall like that one.

    Hi Paul,

Your tank looks nice -- what types of plants are those?

I really like your driftwood. Is it all one piece or 2 separate pieces? The color of the wood is beautiful. Do you happen to know what type of wood it is?

I'm looking forward to watching your journey as well.

Plants are rangeri sword and Anubis barteri. It's supposed to grow tall but in this aquarium it tends to spread more than grow upwards.

The wood is two pieces of mopani wood, that I have joined together to make the arch. I boiled it for 6 hours a year ago and it still drops tannins. The neons seem to get brighter as the week goes on though.

    Thanks for the compliment.

New fish are ordered. This tank is getting 8 more neons, 7 more emperors, 6 bandit cories and a couple of nerite snails to help with the algae. This aquarium does get some daylight so hoping the snails can help keep it in check. Nitrates are only 5 when I do my weekly water change.

Good choice on TWS. If I ever got back into Neons I would order them from TWS, love my Cardinals and Green neons I got from them.

What a fun fish order you have coming! I'm excited for you.

Your 6 bandit cories sound particularly interesting. What made you pick those, please? These look so very cool. *mutters* to myself: these may have to go on my FishWishList....

I really enjoy my Neons. They play in the current often. I tried to capture and post a video of a few of them swirling around one another, but my video post didn't take. The activity was either all in fun play or a dispute over whom is boss -- I've no idea which. Someone who knows more than I do could probably tell right off the bat. They really are entertaining and beautiful little fish.

I'm curious: Will the Emperors school with the Neons? (hopefully that is not too nave of a question)

Your tannins from all that beautiful wood are probably really appreciated by your stock. There is a 'tetra lady' at the fancy LFS here and she says she purposefully keeps her water tea-like. From what I read about the cories you're getting, they will appreciate it too.
