  1. Default 40 gallon redhump eartheater community

I picked up 7 F2 Geophagus Steindachneri fry at the local MAS fish auction last sunday. I got them for the winning bid of 13.00 They are about 3/4 of an inch long and are extremely fast and hungry. They go nuts when they see me it's great! This will be my first time raising baby cichlids, but I think it will be worth it.

Right now I have them in a 10g tank but am working on setting up a 40gallon breeder. I will be painting the back black and have a couple 50# bags of pool filter sand for substrate. I'm thinking just driftwood for decor. I still need to get a light and glass top. I plan on insulating the bottom of the tank with some styro as it's in my basement and it's pretty cold down there in winter time. I'll probably use 2 200w heaters, maybe overkill but I have a few spares available. I also have a spare magnum canister filter for filtration and a power head with sponge filter. Since it's a double stand there's not much room for a hob filter.

Here's a pic of my setup. I'd post a pic of the fry but they move at light speed and are near invisible to the camera.

Gotta love auctions, great price. You plan on just growing them out and trading them when they get too big? Never seen a double 40g breeder metal rack before, looks like it could use a coat of black rustoleum spray paint.

My goal is 1 male 2-3 female group. I don't think they get much bigger than say firemouths. Outcasted males can go in my 120g.
The stand probably is custom, I got it when a fish store was closing. It probably could use a little work, but I don't know how long the paint would hold back rust on the bottom. I'll have to think about it.

You definitely want to neutralize that rust if you plan on having the tanks set up for a long period of time. It can only get worse if you don't.
