    Default Euthanization of a Fish

So was looking at my 10g Filled with Orchid Endlers (like 40+) that I plan to sell to a friend later this week, just trying to get a count of how many males I had... when my SO points out one female that didn't look right... She was covered in white dots and was very thin, however she was the only fish in the tank showing any signs of sickness. I figured the best method would be to cull before whatever it was spread (ick, columaris etc)

I know clove oil is typically the go to, but didn't have any available. I have heard of 2 other methods that are available to everyone so I figured I'd try the one. I took a tupperware container (got me in trouble), filled it with water and tossed a few ice cubes in it, I then put it in the freezer for 20 mins or so till it was very very cold

Took the fish and placed it in the water, within probably 2-3 seconds it passed. Considering some of the other methods I had seen i felt this worked well for small fish.

I know with larger fish it is recommend to place them in water and then put the water in the freezer so that it isn't sudden, but with a very small fish like an endler this was effective and humane

Now I need to watch the tank for a few days and let the buyer know of what happened so that they can also keep an eye on them. They are being upgraded to a 125g so I think the cause (cramped living conditions) will be fixed quickly

It always sucks when we lose fish and having to euthanize them is even harder. Hopefully you caught it early enough and only the one fish was affected.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Yea... I felt bad... I may have been able to save it... but felt myself thinking that I needed to consider the risk to all the other fish in the tank by trying to save just the one

No, don't feel bad. Sometimes euthanizing a fish is the humane thing to do. It's always a difficult choice but sometimes it's the best thing to do.

hopefully I caught whatever it was early enough. I'm glad these guys are going to a bigger tank, I couldn't sell them because I wasn't getting any male fry, finally found someone that wanted the entire lot. Gonna re-vamp the tank with a different type of fish

I use clove oil for small fish but for large (discus) I use Tricaine-S (MS22) from Western Chemical. 1 gram MS22 to 1 gram baking soda mixed in two gallons of tank water.

I know this isn't what this thread is about, but I've read that endlers giving birth to females has a lot to do with conditions of the tank. If they drop below standard for the species they start producing less males and more females in an attempt to self cull. I don't know how true this is but it could be an answer to your troubles and something to think about if you try this again.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

Yea, I've seen a few things, none that have been proven, some say temp, others say conditions. I have started seeing a few more males, but I had a 2 month period where I only had 2 males

I do the same, but with ever clear instead of water, and they're dead before they're fully submerged.
