Definitely. They are a group of 9. Works well :)

It's true, lots of tail slapping and squabbles to look at!

One of the best shoaling fish out there. Anybody that can't decide what to put in your tank, go Harley, LOL!!
It was you who put me on to them Lee, so thanks!

On your QT... why not screw the BB and just go heavily planted? You can make it look nice and the fish will appreciate the coverage, the natural scaping of healthy plants and the plants will eat up the majority (if not all) of your fish waste. Throw in some hygros, frogbit or duckweed, water sprite, green cabomba and hornwort.

When given a choice, most (if not all) plants will utilize ammonia over nitrates, for nourishment. If you have no bacteria in your tank yet, you won't have to worry about nitrite or nitrate production, because the bacteria that synthesizes ammonia isn't present, thus the nitrite synthesizers aren't present either.

However, since there's a possibility of Nitrite production from an established tank, you need to think of which plants would do well to synthesize nitrite, once ammonia has been cleared. The answer is the floating plant. Duckweed, frogbit, water lettuce, hornwort and water sprite are great at reducing nitrite and nitrate levels.

So, with that in mind, you can have a QT without having to worry about BB. Your fish wouldn't be living in the QT indefinitely, so this temporary housing facility would be perfectly fine. I wouldn't suggest trying to keep a main tank without BB filtration, but it can be done, and BB filtration would eventually occur, anyway... both in the filter and on substrate/ornaments (it would just build more slowly and you probably wouldn't notice it). These things, combined are nature's waste management.

    Something to consider.

Yes you do! =] And then you need to take a video and share with the rest of the class. ;P
It is tempting to set up another tank but the idea is to keep it bare to and monitor the fish. I had an initial issue with this however, nothing to simulate a natural environment.

The plants could solve that but should there be an outbreak or something needs medicating then I'd have to tear it down to clean again afterwards.

For a few reasons like that, a QT needs to remain easily cleanable :/

Daily PWC would make up for the minimal BB but I'm not feeling that risky just yet

You can't monitor fish in a planted tank? I do every day. Why would you have to break it down to clean again? Bacteria and parasites aren't zombies. Once they're dead, they're dead. How do you think people can treat their main tanks without having a second outbreak, after treating?

Just read any guideline on setting up a QT tank. It explains better than I can. Good area for discussion though. Who uses one, why, what it looks like etc

Not one guideline states that a QT should gave anything in besides a few hides. That's it!

All things considered, I'm not against your idea ;) just curious why it's the first time I have heard it

I think you are confusing a hospital tank with a quarantine tank, as many people do. A hospital tank should be bare, a quarantine tank should be set up as though it were a show tank.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I think it is because most people don't keep a QT tank running when there aren't fish to QT. Fill one full of plants and what are you going to do with those plants when you tear down the QT. I like the idea of doing what Kevin suggests, but if I recall your GF wasn't too thrilled with the QT tank being set up even temporarily. Soooooooo this route might be out for you depending on how she would feel about it. lol

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

I disagree mommy. Ready any guideline on setting up a QT. Including http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/disease/quarantine.php

I may have mixes up the need for cleaning the QT though.
