I have kept a lot of the wild fish around here, and most of them are not terribly striking to look at (the flathead chub is an exception; a school in a well-lit aquarium are very striking), but they more than make up for it in their behavior.

Yeah, that part about the chiller is what is holding me back as well. Though I've got an extra dehumidifier laying around, might have a little DIY project.

Sounds fun. This is Wyoming; I've never even seen a DEhumidifier. ha ha ha

We only have johny darters in Wyoming, and just barely. They are cool, but those rainbows are lovely. Probably our most colorful fish outside game fish are redside shiners. The game fish, now, can be beautiful. Spawning brook trout are about as pretty as they come, and golden trout rival any saltwater fish I've ever seen for color. I hear they are extremely difficult to keep in captivity, though.

You easterners definitely have the prettier (small) fish in your creeks. Enjoy!

From what I've read they are protected in Tennessee and Georgia, but North Carolina does allow collection without any permit. They are actually listed as a species of Least Concern overall, its just that the populations in Tennessee and Georgia have been negatively impacted and those states are trying to re-establish their populations.

These are really awesome as well.

The orange ones are Saffron shiners. The bigger silver ones are Warpaint Shiners.

I've caught a lot of local fish around the area, and was even lucky enough to go up and catch Snake River cutthroat trout. Of all the trout, I prefer the varieties of cutthroat the most
