There is a way to make this work im sure. Adding ceramic media next to the intake would be big enough to at least create a barrior to stop small pieces from clogging. you could also look to wrap the intake in a sponge-like material like a prefilter sponge allowing more mechanical filtration while protecting your impellers. With a sand bed above it you wont see it and you will in effect never have to clean it because of the filter stages there... You could also add an upside down wier like what is in an overflow box for extra protection.additionally the height is adjustable based on you for the powerheads.. doesnt have to be on the bottom and honestly shouldnt just be there.

For bio media I was thinking of using lava rock because it's bigger pieces and I've got a lot laying around. Then add the two layers of filter floss. I wouldn't cover those with sand, they would be exposed. I'd maybe put a few rocks in strategic positions to hide it. I've already got an idea floating in my head to raise it up a little. As for the powerheads I was thinking like you and would have one powerhead a little higher than the other to even out the parts in the tank that get the most flow.

I think I'm more excited to see what I can accomplish with this manifold system than I am with the rest of the tank! hahaha

Alright everyone, starting my first journal here. I've posted in a few places concerning a river tank with manifold system and I'm about ready to start her up.

First thing I have to do is build the stand. I should be getting the lumber either today or tomorrow.

This will be in a 40 gallon breeder and I'll be running two Aquaclear 50s in the system. I'm going to try and do something different with the manifold system. Everything I've read indicates that most people who build this type of system add an additional filter to increase filtration and bio media since most manifold systems rely on just two or more sponge filters. I don't want to do this. So I've come up with a design I'm going to post when I get the chance. Basically the intake area will not have the typical sponges around the intake pipes. I'm going to lay the pipes on the bottom and cover with a layer of bio media, and two filter pads and put a barrier between this and the rest of the substrate to keep the sand out. It'll make more sense once you see my plans. If you think you can shoot holes in my idea, please do, I want to do this correct the first time. I will do a little RnD before getting it fish ready.

    Now onto fish.

Going to go with traditional hillstream loaches, though not sure what kinds. Depends on what this new LFS can get me.

I posted in fish compatibility on what kind of upper level fish would work and there were quite a lot of suggestions. This was tough because I was hoping to break the norm and stay away from White Clouds. I like them, I just wanted to do something different. My difficulty is getting a fish that liked a fast current and temperate water. I think I'm going to shoot for 70 degrees so not entirely a cold tank. Rainbows, congo tetras, rasboras ssp, denison barbs, odessa barbs, ruby barbs were suggested. Just to name a few. Right now I'm eyeing the Scissortail Rasboras. Thoughts? Suggestions?
I'm very excited that you have started your journal. I posted this in your other thread

Scissortails grow to 4-5 inches and need a 48 inch tank. They would love the river tank setup, but unfortunately, not in a 40B.

I agree. All your flow would be at the bottom instead of mid-tank. And the rocks that the hillstreams need to hold on to would disrupt the flow even more.

Well curses. That eliminates a lot of fish. Giant Danios, Denison Barbs, turquoise rainbows.

Ok, my next pick is the Odessa Barb. Seriouslyfish.com says this would be a good fish for this type of set up and will do well in my size of tank. What do you guys think? Am I mistaken in believing this is commonly called the Rosy Barb? Or is that something entirely different?
