Cool I am the proud owner of a new Aqueon 40 Long

Sorry to hijack your journal, but today I went and did it. This journal got me thinking very seriously about setting up that river tank. So, just for the heck of it, I called 4 LFS to check prices on an Aqueon 40 long. It was a special order item at 3 different LFS, priced at $159.99, $150.49 and $120.00. The 4th LFS I called (in Lombard) had made a special purchase of 40 longs and had 1 left. Price was $89.99 . Needless to say, I drove right over (about a 40 min drive) and bought it. It will be stored until late fall/early winter. I'm going to complete the stand and canopy this summer, while the weather is good, so I guess it's another journal for me!

Now I have to pay very special attention to this journal!

Oh, and drywall. Really, all that drywall is just takin' up valuable space between tank frames -- oh, I mean "beams".
River, you're awesome. This post is full of great ideas.

Compass I am hooked on this river tank and now I am subscribed to your thread and need a new tank... wonder if the husband would consider getting rid of the coffee table.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Thank you guys! It looks like this type of tank has become rather popular on this forum. I really love this style and I love seeing more people interested in giving it a try.

Gronlaura - We'll have to compare stocking notes and try to get as many different species as possible so we have more fish to observe and find out what works best. The hardest part of this build for me has been the stocking. Because not too many people do this it has been really hard to find a good list of fish for this type of tank. Swellias and White Cloud Mountain Minnows are the staples. This is fine but I wanted more!!! This is probably due to the fact that those two fish are readily available. I'm willing to wait for the more interesting fish. This will be fun. I think you got the better choice with the 40 long. I got the 40B on the dollar per gallon sale, but if I could have found a 40 long for the price you got I would have gone with that.

@Gronlaura ~ just thought I'd provide this link as a fish resource.

    http://franksaquarium.com/

In case you haven't run across this guy, he specializes in more unique fish and has a section dedicated to hillstreams. You can email him particular species you are interested in and I think he'll have better luck finding them than most other places. His prices seem comparable to WetSpot.

@Steeler ~ You might give him a shout concerning those red line tetras you want. Can't hurt to have one more guy looking for them for you. :)

Eh, I figured he was probably known in these parts I mean... he does sell fish after all. hahaha But I'd rather tell you and you already know about it than assume you knew and not say anything.

Not much of an update. Still fooling with the stand, just haven't had much time this past week. I'm going to pull the manifold a part and glue it all together. I'll set all the pieces out and take a reference picture so you can get an idea of what PVC parts I used.

Had a great weekend. Got my manifold system glued up and it is ready to go. I'll get pictures of it dissembled so you can see what I used. I'd like to give a shout out to Drew's_fish_99 for tipping me off to his LFS having a customer appreciation day. Drove an hour to Knoxville and was not disappointed. Great crowd, amazing fish, and lots of learning done. I didn't end up buying anything as I've been looking for Marbled Hatchets for my 20 and they were sold out. :( However, you all know how it is. You see pictures of fish and they never do them justice. Sandz suggested I get a Farlowella for this tank and they had quite a few. I wanted one before, now I'm totally on board, they are really cool. They also had a nice school of Gastromyzon borneensis. Incredibly tiny fellows. I just wanted to hug them. I probably looked odd, I woke up that morning with a really bad crick in my neck. So to see the fish on the bottom shelf I pretty much had to just lay on the ground. DEDICATED!!! It was a very impressive store, lots of cool stuff to get a feel for. Saw a few people from youtube (Pecktec for one). Plus free hotdogs and cokes!!!
