    Default water-change temperature difference

    0 Not allowed!
    hey guys.
I'm wondering when you change your water how many degrees Celsius do you allow the water you are about to add to your tank to be different from your tank.
for example my tank water is 25.7 degrees and i allow the water i am about to add to be 24.7-26.7, so i allow a 1 degree difference between the two.
    just curious
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

I don't measure my water change water - just match the temp as best I can by hand testing out of the tap.
My top off water is straight cold water (usually a gallon twice per week, on a 20gal tank). The "cold" water tho, is usually room temperature - its not like I run the tap for long enough for really cold water to come out.

Temperature fluctuation doesn't matter so much so long as it is fairly gradual.
Fish Stores use straight cold water when they do changes.

Anyone who has tried to drop their temperature a few degrees in the summer can vouch for how difficult it is to drop the tanks overall temperature just by adding a few gallons of water.

In my current tank I have my temperature alarm set to go off at 22 and 28 degrees celsius, with the tank normally at 24.5 (the heater is non-adjustable), which is a pretty wide range. It has gone off a couple times with no detrimental effects on the inhabitants.

agreed. especially when the volume changed is less than half, I just make sure it is within 2 degrees celsius
    of the tank.

i used to hand test too,
but one day i decided to test and it was 20 when i expect it to be 26.
that would have made around a 3 degree change since i would have changed 50 %
since then i have been testing.

I used to "hand test" the temp of my water to add, too...it cost me the lives of 4 of my rosy tetras...I learned my lesson the hard way, and now I digitally test the temp of my tap water before it gets even close to my tanks.

I always try to match the temp of the replacement water as close as I can the the tank water

As I refill with a python, I place the python at the temp sensor for my digital thermometer as I know exactly what the temp of the replacement water and can adjust the temp to match by adjust the not/cold taps

If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I use buckets to fill my tank and always use a thermometer to make sure that the new water is the same as the tank water. I've read too many threads about people killing or stressing their fish out with adding colder water.

I usually put two small tub of water aside for at least a day, and put in the liquid to remove chlorine etc. I put the tubs by the fire place to they are a few degrees warmer than room temperature. As I don't do more the 20% the difference is not substantial once mixed with the water already in the aquarium.

In my case, the deaths of my fish was caused by water that was too warm.

I usually put the tank's heater in the water for an hour or so before change, or if it's very cold I acclimate the water inside of hot water in a tub until the temp goes down.
