Not sure what is happening with my cycle -

Can you have .25 or <.25 (but not 0) ammonia, 0 nitrites and nitrates of 40? If you have 0 nitrites and are showing nitrates, shouldn't you also have 0 ammonia?

My guess is that you would see those kind of readings in an already cycled, but spiking, tank. For example, if someone had a cycled tank with fish in it, I would think you would see readings like that temporarily if a fish had died in the tank somewhere and not removed.
Other than that, I would suspect the water originally had nitrates to begin with, and the cycle is still just beginning.

Those are my two guesses...just guesses...

Been cycling 4 weeks with 100% RO/DI water - no ammonia or nitrates in the original water. I think the test color is yellow, add my 1/2 dose of ammonia and have .25 ammonia and 0 nitrites in the left tank after 36 hrs and <.25 ammonia and 0 nitrites in the right tank after 24 hrs. Both tanks have 30-40 nitrates. I have mucho nitrite eating BB, but what is going on with the ammonia eating BB? The nitrites rise after dosing and fall to 0 as they should.

Yeah, I didn't really think those ideas covered what is happening to your tanks, they were just the two scenarios I could think of that might explain those kinds of readings. Hopefully someone else with more experience cycling will chime in.
I've only ever cycled once - every tank I've had since my original tank was seeded from a cycled tank.

Thanks for trying to help. The cycle started out great, but has slowed. The test color never gets to a real yellow color, kind of a yellow green. I even tested my RO/DI water and it showed .25 ammonia. That is impossible, as the DI part takes out any ammonia in my tap water. I just replaced all my RO/DI cartridges, so I know there's no ammonia. Last night I bought (OMG) Tetra ammonia test strips (very expensive buggers at petco) so I can verify my test results. Will test when I get home.

I'm baffled. Don't be embarrassed about the test strips, I might do just the same in this weird scenario.
