  1. Default Pregnant Turtle?

    0 Not allowed!
I have three musk turtles in a 20 gallon tank. I got them as babies, but it has become clear I have one male and two females. He hasn't been able to leave them alone for the past month or so. Last night, one of the females found a way to get out of the tank. Luckily, it looks like the fall didn't hard her. There is a small basking area under a closed lid, but she is able to open the lid. I have a weight holding it down at the moment, but she's trying her best to get out again.

Do you think she's just trying to escape the male or that she may be pregnant? Anyway to tell if she is pregnant, and if so what would next steps be?

Even if she isn't pregnant, this turtle is determined to escape. My family warned me if I bought another tank they would host an intervention. I figured this is the perfect excuse so went out and picked up a starter kit (you know the ones that don't give you enough to get started). I went with the 20 gallon long
Deluxe Turtle Kit from Zilla. It wasn't too bad for the price. The only complaint is one side has a cut out for a filter that is rather low. It leaves the water level at about 4 inches and is way too big for the filter.

I used tape and cardboard to fill up the opening for now. Everything else is make shift as well. I had to borrow the coffee table from the living room for a stand. I'm sure I'll hear about that. I used a plastic container and left over gravel from another tank to use as a nesting area. I covered it with green moss. Hopefully, she'll find that suitable enough. The kit didn't come with a heater, but room temp. is between 74 and 76 this time of year for me.

I've never kept turtles before. Any advice would be helpful.

they like to lay their eggs in sand so I would replace the gravel with sand or a sand/dirt mix and see what happens.

I did put sand in it, but she decided to lay her eggs last night under water. She pulled all the moss into the water and hid them under there. I'll post pictures once I can get batteries for the camera.

I'm not sure if I should move the eggs out of the water or leave them as is. I'll be leaving town for a week. I'm going to leave them as is for now.

I don't think turtle eggs should stay underwater. I would move them very carefully to the sand.
