Thread: Molly Help

  1. Default Molly Help

I have a white molly that was born in my tank about 6 or so months ago. He has been doing great the whole time. Within the last week or so I have started seeing him swimming funny. He will point his head straight up and swim around like he is standing up. And he is always going 90 to nothing and not really getting anywhere....

Is this a sign of swim bladder problems?

What can I do to help the little guy out? All the other fish are doing great!

It sounds like swim bladder, but be sure to check your water. Fresh water is always a good thing for sick fish.

    The most common cures are:

Do not feed for 3 days, then feed skinned peas or use broad spectrum antibiotic.

Molly's are real sensitive to nitrates , anything over 20 ppm is considered unhealthy for them and yours look to be between 40 - 80 ppm right now.

And that nitrite reading should be 0. Anything more than that and there is a problem. It would be a really good idea to do some water changes.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

That tank is not cycled, the fish is choking and dying from it's own waste.

I agree with the others, your water needs attention. How long has the tank been running and what fish are in it now?

Yeah you will want to jump start the cycle on that tank by getting a chunk of some other filter media that has already been used quickly. I'm guessing the fish are just having issues with the water parameters. Molly fish are usually pretty hardy from my exp. with them. What are you feeding them? here is a video
these fish do not like high nitrates like others have already stated. I would act fast on getting your water fixed or the fish might die on you.
