thank you very much, y'all ^
    *beams*

I wandered in (oh, who am I kiddin' -- I drove across town, for the sole purpose of going) to the fancy LFS this afternoon.

They did my water test: Ammonia 0; Nitrite 0; Nitrate 0; pH 7.8
I specifically questioned the Nitrate, and they are certain.

I was interested in getting some Red Cherry Shrimp, but they told me my Platys would eat them. I'd not want that -- yikes. So I'll not do RCS. Bummer, yeah.. but my kids have already named our Platys and we really like them. I am sort of one who, once I take on a pet, I very much consider it *mine*. So, my Platys won't be going back (this was an offer) and unless I learn differently, we won't be getting any RCS.

Saving the best for last: I told them I was ready to purchase my first batch of Neon Tetras. They asked how many I wanted to end up with and advised that I go ahead and get all at once. They are juveniles, and they said my water perimeters looked perfect. I do like that this pretty much guarantees they are all around the same age -- this was actually a concern of mine.

I bought 18 (they gave me 19) Neon Tetras. I'm so excited! They are beautiful. I hope I did alright by getting them all at once. They acclimated (drip method again) well and seem super happy in their new home.
40 gal fw: 3 Platys; 16 Neon Tetras; 9 Cherry Barbs; ~30 Red Cherry Shrimp; an Assassin snail
live plants: 2 Lace Java Fern on dw; a Moss ball; 2 bunches of Java Moss on rocks; some Cladophora algae on dw

Sounds like you LFS knows what they are doing. Good score on the 19th Neon. When I bought fish from the LFS here the owner would "toss" in a fish once in awile.

So... I'm going to ask if this is a common feeling for newbies. Those of you who've been in for a while, perhaps you can try to think back... way back for most perhaps.

Each and every time (it feels) that I think I've perhaps got a decent grasp of some little aspect in this hobby, it seems as if I turn around and all of a sudden realize: I. Know. Nothing.

my question is: Does that ever stop happening? Am I just doomed to feel lost forever?

I'll go console myself now and find peace by watching my tank. That usually works. *smiles*

I think what makes a hobby special (any hobby) is the chance to always learn something new. Once you know everything pertaining to a subject, it gets boring. There are people here that know way way way more than I do, but I think they'll agree with me when I say. That'll happen to you for as long as you keep fish. Might not happen as often, but you won't ever get it all figured out. That's a good thing in my opinion.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

Everytime a perfectly healthy fish dies, I get the same feeling, so no it does not go away, at least for me.

That feeling over times eases a bit as you learn more and more but will never go completely away. Even those who have researched and researched how to set up a tank, what species of fish works best with their water parameters and put in the work to keep the fish thriving will still come up against issues they've never dealt with previously and will have to continue to learn more but that's why this hobby is so addictive!

So y'all say to embrace this feeling... alright. I do see the point about it being ever-interesting. *smiles* Thank y'all for the assurances. I'll just embrace the fact that this new-found hobby is a renewable resource of mental stimulation. *grins*

AmyLynn ~ Thank you kindly. They are super fun to watch! I was amazed to note that the addition of the Neon school -- which the kids named The Bees -- actually improved the attitude of the bully Platy (son named him Blaster when we first got him. It suits him well.)

Your tank looks Great! More pictures!

I think (read that hoping) we'll get to a place where we spend most of our time, enjoying our little sea worlds. With occasional trips to panic-land. With each trip, we'll learn more and maybe the "trips" become further apart. There is always more to learn in a hobby that involves living creatures, because they don't always adhere to our rules.

We do the best we can and keep the school in session...but in the meantime, ENJOY!! You're doing a good job!

I had red cherry shrimp with platys, GBR. And i do not think they were food for the fish. But i might be wrong. I have a EBR with 40? Shrimp and i dont see predation of shrimp.
