Thread: PPM Question

  1. Default PPM Question

    0 Not allowed!
I'm doing a fishless cycle right now and have a question that is more just my own curiosity...

Let's say I dose the tank to 4 PPM ammonia. When the bacteria convert that nitrite, what will the nitrite PPM be? And then what will the nitrate PPM be? Is it a one to one conversion? Will I have 4 PPM nitrite and then 4 PPM nitrate?

I need the cycle to finish so I can get some fish soon, I make a lousy chemist :)

I dont think its a 1/1 but i dont know the chemistry or biology behind it. Why do you ask?

I agree, I don't think there is a specific ratio. Tanks don't cycle the same. Keep testing your ammonia, when you have 0 ammonia, test for nitrites. When you have 0 ammonia and are showing nitrites, dose 1/2 the original dose of ammonia. Do this each time your ammonia reaches 0. When you are showing nitrites, you will start to show nitrates and they can get very high. When you have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites every 24 hrs, you are cycled.
