    Default New Tank Stock??

    0 Not allowed!
So I just recently received a 55 Gallon aquarium with its stand, filters, etc from my Marine Biology teacher at school. The tank's dimensions are 48"L x 13"W x 21"H. Due to its lack of width there's not really that many larger fish that can comfortably live in this tank. I'm having some trouble deciding on what I'd like to stock it with.

Currently the stock is going to be:
    10x Nannostomus beckfordi
    1x Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
(The fish listed above are going to be moved into the 55 gallon, when its setup, from my 20 gallon.)

I was thinking of getting a few female GBRs, maybe 2-3, and trying to get a mated pair of rams. Along with that I'd love to up my school of Beckford's to around 15-20. Lastly I'd love to purchase an Angelfish. With all this fish my proposed stock would be:
    15-20: Nannostomus beckfordi
    3-4x Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
    1x Angelfish

I'm not too sure if the Beckford's can live with the Angelfish as I'm worried they'll be eaten. Adult Beckford's reach above 2" and the majority of the 10 that I currently own are 2"+. Would it be safe to keep them with an Angelfish? Also would an Angelfish work in this tank despite the tank's lack of width? The tank is quite long and has very good height to it but it lacks width. Would it be safe for an Angel?

Also are there any other oddball fish you believe would work?

The tank size is fine for an Angel, even a pair would be plenty happy, although I would personally worry about the pencil fish with an Angel. If the Angel decides to, it can and will eat them.

If I were to go with Angels, I would limit the tank mates to Lemon Tetras, Cory's and the calm cichlids or if you have the patience for great water, a discus. Angels get big over time and can get quite moody.

Are you positive I'd have issues with the pencils? They're really gorgeous and I believe they'd make the tank look amazing but I don't want to risk it as I bought them for $4 each and that adds up to quite a lot when you're purchasing 15-20 of them.

It's those "slim shaped" body type that make them appealing as "snacks" for an Angel. Good suggestion from Cygnus on Lemon tetras if you want the Angel. I will also suggest Head and tail lights, Black phantom tetra and Diamond tetra, they all have the higher body shape.

Hmm.. This puts me in an odd place as I planned to move all my fish from my 20 gallon to my new 55 and then all my fish from my 10 gallon to my 20. Now I have no idea where to keep the Beckford's pencils as I don't want to keep 3 tank set up...

EDIT: It turns out that Beckford's are known for nipping long-finned surface dwellers such as Angelfish, which I've noticed them do to my GBR they soon learned to leave him alone though. Maybe I'll just keep my 3 tanks set up. I'll keep my 10 gallon as is but I'll move my GBR from the 20 gallon to the 55 gallon as I planned earlier.

Also I want to avoid a pair of Angels. I only want one. It'd be awesome to have 2 or 3 in there, as they look gorgeous in groups, but I don't want the stress of dealing with fighting cichlids or aggressive, breeding fish. One nice, healthy, gorgeous Angel is good enough for me.

Alright does anyone have any good schooling fish species? I want some more colorful tetras. I hate the behaviors of smaller schooling tetras and hate their lack of personality so I'd prefer a species with quite a bit of color, preferably reds and oranges.

I would be a little worried about the Pencilfish. Adult size seems plenty big enough, but they're very slim fish. If you want my personal opinion, ( I'm gonna give it to you anyway ;p) I've found that large schools of schooling fish look quite well in large tanks. That's not to say the angel wouldn't look good cause I'm sure it probably would. Just another route to consider. A 55 gallon is about the perfect size for a large centerpiece fish surrounded with schools of fish to fill in the space. Either way will look great!
I have more (and better) conversations with fish, dogs, and myself than I do with actual people.
Myself, the fish, and the dogs all agree.

If you want reds or oranges I'd go with serpae tetras, their colours get really vivid.

Red phantoms have all the color of a Serpae without the nastyness. The original form of Von rio tetras are nice. Even though they are not red I've realy liked what I've seen of the Candy cane tetra.

Ohh I like those red phantoms. Hmm I think I might go to Tropiquarium, my lfs, and check out their stock again. They have an enormous tank with Angels, other large cichlids and many types of schooling fish. The have a huge variety so hopefully going back again will help me figure out exactly what I want.

Positive, no. Some people can get away with keeping Angels with all sorts of fish and never have an issue. As others have said, it's the slim shape that would make the pencils seem like a nice snack, especially once the Angel gets bigger.

I've got a buddy that lives close to me that had his Angels take out a couple of his female threadfin rainbows. They had gotten along well for a couple of years and then all the sudden they became snacks.

I personally think that Angels would make a fantastic center piece with larger tetras.
