I'm lucky I guess, no plant ferts whatsoever...my Amazon could probably use a tab now and then, but when the older leaves start to look bad, I just cut them off and new ones sprout up...I've noticed lately that a handful of berried RCS call the Amazon home

Great looking tank so far, Larry! =] Glad you started this journal. I keep a 2" sand bed - that's deep enough for pretty much any root system (including Dwarf Lillies who have some of the biggest/complex root systems I've ever seen and I also had 2ft tall swords).
Matt, if you really have 4" of sand in your tank, you might want to try leaving it alone. That's a good opportunity to grow some nitrate oxidizing anaerobic bacteria. ;]
I also buy most of my plants from shop.plantedaquariumscentral.com. Great customer service and their stock is healthy/beautiful.

Hmm, maybe that's why I am lucky enough to always have fairly low trates?...I really don't mess with it much, I can't even really get to it in the back of the tank...I will nudge it around in the front of the tank with the Python sometimes, making little dunes and valleys, but the corys usually level it right back out, lol

Yeah, I've thought about adding more sand to the front of my 40B, but I have a feeling it won't last long. lol Like yours, my cories have made a ditch in the front. The substrate looks cool like that, but I'm sure the plants don't appreciate it.

Remind me, what was the dangerous gas that sometimes builds up in pockets where the substrate is too deep, or too compact?
Haven't read of anyone having major issues with this in awhile, though
