Thanks for the kinds comments! Phew, so it turns out I'm really making posting in this journal a regular thing!!

So onto discussing my 30g. It's a Juwel Rekord 800. I bought a stand for it off TradeMe (NZ's craigs list) but it turns out when it arrived it's about 1/2 and inch too short for the tank, so the tank overhangs off the side a little bit. I know you aren't meant to have tanks overhanging off their stands as it puts pressure on them that they aren't designed to handle. But the overhang is pretty much all the plastic base, and none of the glass itself actually overhangs. Anyone forsee a problem with this, or am I just being paranoid? I asked around my local club and they all thought it would be OK. Better safe than sorry though!

In the box -- yay! My first every brand new tank. :) Bought it 6 months ago and have yet to even open the box.

Here it is on it's stand. Looks good! Stand could use a touch up.

As you can see it really is a very small overhang...

    Up close...

So please let me know what you all think. Safe or not-safe. Someone suggested getting a bit of plywood or something and cutting it to the size of the tank and resting it between the tank and stand, but I don't have the means or skill to do that. I would have to pay someone to do it (which I would rather avoid!).

Also taking requests as to what I will put in this (although I probably won't be starting on it for quite a while as I have the 120g to keep me occupied for the time being!). I have considered upgrading my lamprologus occelatus into this tank and maybe adding a different species of fish if I can get my hands on some (julies maybe?) but I haven't really researched this much yet. I already have an Asian community and will soon have a SA community so something different will be good... I have considered a Congo tank with kribensis and upsidedown cats, but the only african tetras we can get here are Congos and they are a but large for this tank. So would need suggestions on what else to go in here (must research the minimum tank size for a Pantodon Butterfly Fish or Leopard Ctenopoma). I would also LOVE to try Malawis or Tanganyikans apart from my shellies but I don't know if there are any species which are small enough to have a colony in a 30g tank. It's 31 x 14 inches footprint BTW.

    All advice/opinions/criticism welcome.

It looks like the glass does extend just a bit beyond the top. That would make me very nervous - for a 30 gal, you're looking at 300-360 lbs - I wouldn't take the chance. I also suggest a piece of wood the same size as the tank frame.

+1 to the above. Plywood is fairly cheap, it should be easy to cut to size...someone with a circular saw could have it done in no time

Then get a piece of foam board, cut to the same size, to go between the tank and plywood

Amelia is a Sevrum?! Kidding of course. Glad to see you're back! Your voice has always been a welcome (and pleasant) one.

You've got some beautiful tanks there. Really like your 60gal, even though you "let it go." ;P The shelley tank looks fun, too.

Your cat, Pollo, reminds me of a ring-tailed lemur. It's gotta' be the contrasting colors of the tail and body, right? Awesome looking cat.

As for your 30gal: Agreed with the others. I'd be too nervous to let it go, without additional support. In theory, you'll probably be fine, but do you really want to take the risk of having dead fish and 30 gallons of water on your floor, when you least expect it? Better to be safe than sorry.

I would also be on the safe side and put a piece of ply on there. You state your stand needs a touchup and you can get a piece of ply cut and paint it at the same time.

For stock...what about a central american theme? Maybe some Cryptoheros nanoluteus and some live brearers.

I don't think we can get those here, Jenn. At least I've never seen them anyway! But I suppose I could pick some other CA species. It's a shame I just sold my pair of Sajicas.

Okay, I will find somewhere that sells and cuts ply. Thanks to everyone for your input. Do you guys think I will need to screw it onto the cabinet or is just resting in between good enough?

Thank you for the kind words Kevin. :) Haha now that you mention it he does look like a lemur! I actually wanted to name him Momo like the lemur in the last airbender but my partner didn't like it.

Also I am thinking of painting the back of this tank black. Any suggestions on what type of paint to use? I have been told that spraypaint works well but I really really don't want to use spraypaint because I'll be doing the painting in the house. I tried acrylic paint last time but it cracked and started peeling off after a day so I had to strip it all off again! Do you need to prime the back of the tank somehow?

    Thanks in advance.

Look at Krylon brand paints...they make paint that will stick to anything. I typically use the Krylon Fusion spray for my tank backs but have heard of others using the brushon latex enamel. Just read the packaging and opt for paint which sticks to glass.

You wouldnt have to screw the ply to the stand...the weight of the tank will be more than sufficient to hold it in place.
