Panda Cories prefer softer water with a lower pH around 6-7.5 any higher than that and their lifespan will be shortened. They also prefer lower temps than most cories and are comfortable in temps around 68-76F. They also don't fair well in tanks with other bottom dwellers as they get easily out competed. I had 6 for several months, in perfect conditions, and upon purchasing my GBR they immediately became skittish and rarely ate. Luckily none of them died before I rehomed them but I did learn that if you're keeping pandas you shouldn't have anyone else on the bottom as they will hide and not get anything to eat.

Your issues were probably a combination of unsatisfactory tank parameters as well as stress from other fish and being out competed for food.

Some people consider pH change to be an issue but I don't think it is. Even fish that are normally seen as sensitive, such as my GBR for instance, acclimated properly without any health issues in about an hour or less. You seem to be educated on keeping fish so I'm sure you properly acclimated. The issues were most likely due to what I stated previously.

Get some PH down from LFS. lower the PH of the freshwater during water changes by .2 and gradually bring it down. My tap water comes out at 7.6-7.8 but while I still have it in the bucket I use declorinator and PH down to get it to 6.8-7.

I would not recommend chemicals like PH down, especially for this issue. These type of additives to tanks tend to cause more of an issue with instability and ph swings than help overall water conditions, and serve as a great wallet drain over time.

If the issue is ph from store to home, then a longer and more thorough drip acclimation will adjust the fish to a stable ph and not shock them in a quick change which was the issue I had and was offering as a clue for the OP to look into.

+1 to the above. I would get him 5 panda friends and take your time drip acclimating (dripping 3-4 drops per second will take about 1-1/2 to 2 hrs) to your tank water. Before you start the acclimation, add 1-2 drops of Prime to the shipping bag to detoxify any ammonia.

Thanks guys - no worries, no chemicals other than prime going into my tank. Everything else is too happy!
Mr Solo Panda remains fat and happy so maybe I really did have some weaker ones and then too great a PH difference. I cannot discount that I did not acclimate them sufficiently. When I get back from vacation end April I will get the LFS to bring some in for me. As long as Mr Solo Panda is still around. If he isn't, then I am not pushing the issue and might just increase my pygmy numbers instead.

    I appreciate the continued help!

Sorry for the losses, Soot. Looks like you got a lot of good advice and I hope you're able to increase your panda school eventually, but if not, I'd take Steeler's advice and attempt a similar looking species that's hardier.
