Halogens are as inefficient as incandescents, most of the energy they consume is given off as heat, not light

The CFL's that "look normal" are still the curly ones, just tucked into dome shaped housings...you pay more for that, usually

Oh lol. I think I will start replacing all my bulbs with cfls. There is only 13 bulbs in my whole house so shouldn't take long. The thing I don't like about cfl is they take ages to "warm up". The light they emit is really dim when you first turn them on.

If any of you are curious about how much power lights, filters, and other stuff is actually using, can use a kill-a-watt meter. It just plugs into the wall and then you plug whatever you want into it. If you are in the states, a lot of public libraries have kill-a-watt meters you can sign out.

Several years ago I borrowed a meter after getting a really high power bill, and went on a mission to lower it. Had I think 15-20 tanks at the time with heaters, hob and canister filters, and lights. Once I realized how power hungry the lights and heaters were, I redid most of my tanks. I sold/traded away all hob filters and some of the canister filters. Just kept a few canisters for the 120g and 55g tanks. All the other tanks have sponge filters running off a single large air pump. Took heaters off of majority of the tanks as well, found it cheaper to just to heat the room instead. The tanks I have lights for, mostly go on for just a few hours when I'm at home to enjoy the tanks. The planted tanks get their 8-10 hours of light still. I do use timers on all the light fixtures, so no accidentally leaving the lights on all day. In the summer it gets really hot here in georgia, so the lights go on around 5pm till midnight instead. No point adding more heat to the room and the tanks, with the aquarium lights when the sun is out. Also I have blackout curtains in the living room where most of the tanks are, helps keep the heat out in summer and the cold out in winter.

Oh read up on phantom energy drain, there is a ton of gizmos that keeps drawing power when it's turned off. Game consoles, cable boxes, chargers and other stuff like that. These days most everything in the apt has a power bar plugged into it and I tend to kill the power there to stop the drain.

Yep, I research all the stuff I use for power usage before I start to use it now, I've built spread sheets to determine all 5 tanks could cost a combined $2 per day, but heaters and lights are the big thing, filters not so much

Ours just dropped to $240 from $300 a month. The replacement of Furnace/Blower looks like it's paying off.

Big wind storm caused a lot of damage back in 2012 so now our power company gets to pass off their repair costs to us, $9 - $15 dollars added to my bill every month for the next year and we had no damage in our area.

Our province also has debt recovery. We paid off 8 Billion in 2009 but the Liberal government kept collecting it regardless, thanks to green energy were people are paid $0.85 per kilowatt produced by solar/wind and that power sold @ $0.13, well you can see why they need it.
