Thread: Electric Bill!?!
03-14-2014, 08:36 PM #1
I just got my electric bill for last month and almost died....
Typically my electric runs around $100 a month... this month recent bill was $180
There are 3 things that could have contributed to it being higher....
1. One day I left our stand up freezer open all day - dumb move
2. Added the 30g Breeder, it has 2 200W heaters in it (basement is chilly, but tank is covered)
3. Sump pump has been running a bunch
Do these sound like they'd add $80 to a bill.... or am i missing something

first thing i would look at is if any of the rates went up on your bill. on another note, the freezer would cause not only the bill to increase but your power factor to also lower. both are bad things. if the 400W of heater, i would assume isnt on too much even in a cold room, it might acount for 8$ of that. sump pump, see freezer.
80$ for all that, i can possibly see depending on the wattage of the pump and freezer.KING OF THE GOLD BARBS RAWR!!!!

it has also been exceptionally cold over a good chunk of the country causing heaters to run more (I don't know what you use for heat). I have an electric heat pump and mine over doubled than my averageCurrent tanks:

yea, I have a gas furnace, I need to look at the freezer and possibly consider replacing it with a more efficient chest freezer instead
just shocked me... my old apartment (700sf house I rented) I'd have bills $30-50, so even the jump to $100 shocked me... so this came out of nowhere.

All energy prices are going up this long cold winter. I heard on the news that Enbridge, a supplier of natural gas, just asked approval for a rate increase of 40%! I had a gas bill (propane) of $900 for Jan...
Seems wrong for them to ask for increases when demand is about to drop - its March after all - and you know they won't drop the rate again, ever, even tho we likely won't see another winter like this for years.

People here complain about Hydro rates, and our worst rate (we have different rates for different times of day) is $0.13/kWh.

$180.00 for hydro a month>>>>> I would love to have those rates back. We average $300.00 a month here and most of my appliances are natural gas as was noted above have a chance of going up 40%. Time to get the chain saw out and heat the old fashion way.Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..
