Without know what the o-ring is made of, I would not use Vaseline. Vaseline will cause some O-rings to swell over time, and not allow you to close the canister properly.

Use food grade silicone grease or olive oil.

I tried the olive oil on the original seal I had when thinking the same thing with the vaseline. made a bit of a oily mess on the top water in the tank. the independent local fish store whom i bought the filter said to use Vaseline on the new o-ring seal and this was from one of their most knowledge people.

I have an Eheim 2215 canister filter, this is from their website:

    07. How do I service sealing rings?

Each time you clean the filter, lubricate the sealing rings lightly with our aquatic maintenance spray 4001000 or with ordinary petroleum jelly (Vaseline). This increases the lifespan of the rubber sealings considerably and ensures easy mounting.

Good point. However o-rings on filters I've seen the last few years are all made out of that new silicon-like flexible stuff. Eheim, and many other manufacturers, recommend vaseline.

The cheap knock offs like SunSun recommend petroleum jelly too but the o-rings on the SunSun that I had were not as flexible as the eheim O-rings.

Too funny, me too Slap. I don't break the Eheim's down very often so tend to forget. Bought a jar and it's right there on the shelf in my fish room now to remind me...

I rarely tear mine down, too...last time, I grabbed the little jar out of the bathroom cabinet, lubed the o-ring real good...then i went to put it back, and I got "the look" from Mrs. Slap....I guess the idea of a little fish filter water on her chapped lips had her perturbed a bit

The little jar of Vaseline is now in my fish supply cabinet, LOL

So went to replace the media, and what do you know... the canister started leaking after everything was put back together again... apparently the new quick release and o-ring only lasted one take. Seems as it is leaking through the head of the canister. This filter is going in the trash, already put 50$ into leakage repairs and can not be trusted, buyers beware of JBJ Reaction Canister Filters. I bought a Aquatop Af-250 to replace it.
