The tank is probably cycled since she hasn't messed with anything in quite some time. Ammonia and nitrite are probably 0 (I could be wrong), it's the nitrates and GH that concern me. The fish don't have any outward signs of poisoning from bad parameters and that's a good thing, but not a definite. Before you do anything test the parameters including GH, Then test her tap water and compare the results, this will tell you if it's safe to change a lot of water or not.
Usually I don't recommend saving any of the old tank water but in this case you might want to save it all, depending on the differences in GH from the tap and tank. If there is a big difference save all the water, clean the tank thoroughly, refill it with the old tank water and start small water changes every three or four days until the GH from the tap matches the GH in the tank.
If there is not a big difference in GH then just clean everything thoroughly, taking care of the bacteria in the filter, and set the tank back up.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

This reminds me of the "before Internet" fish tanks. In my youth I had a 33Gal with an Oscar. Heater, Fluval can (no end of problems) and air stone. Water changes? What's that? Clean the gravel every now and then, canister (every 4 months) and add water was it. Had it running for years until I had to move to the Islands and rehoused my happy, healthy, vibrant albino Oscar. There was a lot of Algae on the back wall and in hind sight I now know it was removing a lot of nitrates. I for one am not surprised those fish look so good.

True about the cycle. If she cycled it to begin with or not, it eventually became cycled, and with the build up of waste in the tank, the BB would gradually grow along with it. After cleaning the tank, you could theoretically add another 1-2 goldfish, though not in that tank.

I wonder how much BB will be removed with just a good cleaning...half?..and probably with no harm done?..because there's gotta be alot in there, it might as well be considered a pond at this point

My guess would be the substrate and decor are carrying a great deal of BB....I wouldn't be surprised if the major clean up causes an ammonia spike...but hopefully with the seeded filter it shouldn't amount to much...if at all....

I'm with Deb on this line of thinking. Maybe do as many suggested, over time, bit by bit. Hate to see anything happen to the fish as they've made it this far looking none the worse for wear....

if I had to clean up this tank, I would probably go for gravel vacs every day removing 10% of water and replacing it with fresh, for at least a week, before undertaking the major cleaning/filter rinsing/large water changes. This should allow the water chemestry to change gradually with minimal shock to the fish and to the BBs growing on the gravel/decor, while removing at least some of the gunk.

This sounds like an excellent idea. Take your time and go slow but steady.
