    Default Collected Leaves?

Does anyone know how to properly sterilize collected leaves for an aquarium? I have a bunch of Beech leaves I collected and I'd like to put in my 10 gallon but I'm worried they may carry pests. I know that by baking and boiling collected would you're sterilizing it but can you bake the leaves also or would they just burst into flames before they got hot enough to kill any pests?

Store 'em in a cool dry place until they're cured. Generally speaking, with leaves you can get away by looks, if it looks healthy enough with no obvious discoloration etc. you can add them to your tank. You'll usually need to soak them ahead of time if you want them to sink, I personally leave oak leaves floating and let them sink naturally so the current of my tank places them where the fish know where to expect them.

I have never heard of people adding leaves they find to tanks, with the exception of indian almond leaves. Not sure what kinds are safe to add, and how do you cure them? just store them in a cool dry place to dry?
    Current tanks:

You can wash the leaves and then let them dry in the shade, just to be sure they're safe. Don't put anything in your tank that looks like it might be sickly or infested (holes in the middle of leaves, yellowing, white spots, etc.) The likeliness that you introduce something to your tank that is harmful is pretty slim, because anything living on the leaves (outside of water) will likely die when it's submerged.

Preetty much, you want 'em as dry as possible. As far as I remember, the only difference is Indian almond leaves have more tannins, but they all share the same benefits.

I have an autumn blaze maple in my back yard and was thinking this could look gorgeous in the tank come fall after they develop that deep red coloration. If I could save them just as they turn and haven't fallen yet. I would wash them out and put them between some wire mesh to dry out

Won't they just turn brown when they're dried out?

They'll probably end up rusty-brown, close enough

Well MSU has some great tips on drying herbs, which I would think would apply to leaves as well:

    http://msue.anr.msu.edu/news/drying_...our_techniques

Alternatively, you could use silica gel packets in a sealed container with the leaves, but I'd be careful to not have the silica touch the leaves since you are planning to use them in the tank.
