  1. Default Wrongly identified the gender of betta

I am new here and will post a proper introduction in the next day or two. Anyways today I went to the pet shop with my wife. We have a male betta and a couple other fishes in our 20 gallon tank. The male betta was moved to the aquarium from a little fish bowl as became much happier. We ended up picking up some cory's and two female bettas. After we put the fishes in the tank when we returned from lunch we saw two of the bettas fighting. The one that was marked as female at the pet shop and looks like a female was fighting with my male betta. I don't believe female bettas are aggressive and flare their gills?! We ended up taking the original male betta out and back into the fish bowl.

Will write again, in another forum.

I don't think it was sexed wrong. The difference between male and female bettas are incredibly distinctive. That being said, I am not sure what the aggression would be coming from.

If i remember correctly, males and females shouldn't be placed in the same tank permanently and can only be done temporarily for breeding. That is why you get solo males, solo females or a sorority of females.

Ok. The intent was to have my original male and two females. Now I have a male and female in the tank, and the male in the fish bowl. Will continue to monitor in case there are issues. With that said the betta male like to briefly chase the patties too.

I thought you had two females and a male. How do you now have one male in a separate bowl and a male/female pair in the main tank?

Bettas are not friendly with any of their species, or species that look like them. Best to house them separately.

Because one female we got from the store is actually make, hence the subject line.

Are you only basing that off the fact that they fought though? What else makes you think it is a male betta? If it looks like a female betta then I would bet good money it is a female betta. They just look very different from the males.

This is exactly right. You can't keep a male betta in with either another male or a female. The two you just bought are probably both female but without a picture I guess we can't be sure.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
