    Until recently, I had eight cardinal tetras (along with a few pygmy cories) in my planted 10g tank. The cardinals are around two years old, and over the past couple months they have been dying off. Water parameters are fine. Old age, I guess...I've read that they don't live very long in a non-blackwater habitat.

    Anyone have any recommendations for a nice schooling fish from the Amazon that does well in a 10g? This is a classroom tank that I have to dismantle every May anyway, so I might just let nature run its course and finish out the year with the pygmies. But it's always good to think ahead.

    look into chili rasboras. Not great schoolers, but they stick together

    GREAT fish as long as they feel comfortable in the tank - my avatar is a pic of one

    these are cute looking fishes, you can go for them if you like :)

    i think both the lemon tetras and panda corys would outgrow a 10g though (at least a school of them would)

    I really like those chilis....maybe one day the 10 gallon will have some, when a 20 long takes it's place...

    That after you get some GBRs too
    • 20 gallon: Posh shrimp tank:2 panda taiwan bee shrimp, 14 F1 hybrid bee shrimps and 30 taitibee
    • 15 gallon:High tech planted tank with 7 forktail rainbow fish, 4 horned nerite snails and red cherry shrimp

    Thanks for correcting me here Triton. I just considered only 1 of them but forgot there has to be a school of these fishes.

    Those chilis are pretty! But I'd like to stick with amazon fish...maybe next school year I'll rehome the pygmy cories and change the 10g into an Asia tank. That might be a good idea...of course, I would still need another tank for Amazon fish. This could get out of hand. :)

    Do the lemons get too big for a 10g, or are they just too active (a la zebra danios)?

    they get up to 2" in size, while 1 would be fine, they prefer schools and a school of 2" fish in a 10g would be a little cramped
