Default Sea hare, what have I purchased.

I usually do my research (at least some) before buying a new critter for my reef tank. On Sunday my son and I were at the coral store and I was looking over their new shipment when this slug like object caught my eye. It was dark with turquoise coloured spots on its body. I asked the guy what it was and he told me it was a sea hare, they really take care of algae on your rocks. I took it home. As I was acclimating my new find I googled said sea-hare. OMG. Any way so far so good. It didn't ink during introduction to the tank, it grazed on a tuff of green hair algae by my one anemone and the Clown didn't bother with it which was a worry. I have to say that when this creature cleans a spot that spot is clean. The rock looks better then when I scrub it with a toothbrush in some tank water. I read these creatures usually always eat themselves out of house and home so I've increased my light back to where I like it.
Anyone have any experience with sea-hares? No more impulse buying for me.

I have no first and experience, but the guys at our SW LFS usually have them in stock. They always have some seaweed in the tank (attached to a small rock with a rubber band) as they have told me that sea hares need a lot of food (algae or seaweed) to eat.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Thanks Cliff I'll let this monster clean my rocks and be prepared to get some seaweed. I've read that hobbyists usually just rent sea-hares and return them when their algae is under control.
This slug moves fast across the glass and I'm surprised that it has such a small mouth to along with that huge appetite.

I've read too that marine clubs will have one circulating their ranks too. I don't know if you're a member or if you even have a local reef club, but I'm sure you could rent him out if you put him in kijiji.

LOL, I have heard about the "rental" sea hair before here.

I've often wondered if this harms the long term health of the sea hair

I read that stable water chemistry is really important to them. My salinity was 1.027 and the lfs was 1.026 so acclimation was slow. I spent 2 1/2 hours dripping and removing water. Maybe over kill but I really didn't want an angry sea hare inking.
There is a freshwater club I know of but I haven't checked into any saltwater clubs around here.

Day three of the sea hare; it eats green hair algae with a zest but will move around the feather algae patches. It grazes during the day and into the evening until after 11pm when I hit the sack so I don't know if it ever rests. The hare will graze off the sand, over the live rock, across the sides of the tank, and over the overflow box.
It was eating a very long clump of green hair algae from a rock which my orange bubble tip anemone is anchored to and the two (including the Tomato Clown) were going about their business as usual which was a relief for me. So far the sea hare has not been harassed by anything in the tank. My Cleaner shrimp follows the hare around for 30 minutes at a time occasionally but always at feelers reach. Its like he's waiting for leftovers.
I did have a small patch of red slime algae on my overflow which I was going to clean off this weekend during tank maintenance but the sea hare took that chore away from me.
After that mower goes over the live rock where algae has been the rock is clean not even a bit of stubble to be seen with the eye.
