  1. Default T5 overhead lights , replace cover ?

    0 Not allowed!
I am a novice on this subject , and understand that I have to do some research before I buy anything.Lot of people favor the t5 halogen lights because are relatively cheap and do not emit excessive heat .
These can be found on ebay with adjustable brackets to fit the required size.So my question is this , Should I buy an aquarium without the hood to accomodate these lights ? because aquarium hoods come with their own lights and with different sizes

Yes. Buy glass canopies to fit your tank
Or build a canopy to house your lighting needs.

    +1 to the above

Using glass lids will allow you to use just about any light fixture you may want to use that will fix on top of your tank.

Before buying your light, it would be best to decide if you want live plants and what type of live plants you want. That will also influence which light fixture and bulbs you buy
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
