  1. Default Can Kuhli loaches breen in home aquarium?

    0 Not allowed!
Everything I have read indicates that Kuhli loaches wouldn't breed in a normal community tank ...

I have quite a few of them and I see them regularly. They are all roughly same sage and long and fat (juicy Kuhlis!) ... This morning there is a much shorter and very thin little wriggly one come out for feeding?! Never seen it before. It's not TINY (ETA: about 1/3 size of the others with more black than gold. I can't find it now, gone back into hiding!), so I can't quite work out what's happened ....

Either they created a baby ... or one of them has shrunk (greedy pig though, nothing wrong with it) or I guess it's been there all along, never grown like the others and for some reason I have never seen it before. Guess the final solution is also the most likely!

I do love them ... Any other Kuhli fans here? They are so fun to watch, they always drape all over the plants and sometime nosedive into the pebbles to dig for leftovers ... you can only see about half an inch of tail sticking out. First time that happened I thought it had died, and suddenly they spring back and charge off to do more important things :)

Kuhlies are one of my favorite fish. I have also read on the internet that people think they don't breed in our tanks but, they have always bred in my tanks.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

    I enjoy my kuhli's immensely.

There are reports of them breeding in captivity. And some people with undergravel filters have complained that they would breed and the babies get trapped under the plates. Their eggs are reported to be bright green.

Mine have not bred to my knowledge. Though that could be a case of them having eggs/fry eaten too.

The surest way to get them to breed is use an UGF.

    Well I haven't got a UGF ... it's probably a stunted one rather than a baby.

Shame! I have had my biggest 5 for nearly 2 years now - they are lovely snake-fish!

Did you buy them that small? If you have places to hide and gravel to burrow under it very well could be a baby.

Lots of places to hide (slate on sand) and smooth pebbles they like to burrow into ... I can;t remember how small they were when I got them - was so long ago ... It's hard to do a headcount. I think I have between 8-10 but I usually see around 7 at the same time and then maybe a flash of something else. I certainly hadn't ever noticed this little guy before today!

They certainly can/will spawn on aquariums, any fry surviving is a different matter though.

    ^^^^Please click the eggs/dragons, thanks.

Well I saw the little fella again this morning, so it definitely wasn't my imagination. He was lying on a slate near some of the other kuhlis and I am now 100% I never even owned a kuhli that little - he is shorter and thinner than any I ever got from the LFS. I tried to get closer but he was gone in the blink of an eye. Verrrrrry shy.

I have a plastic plant in the corner of the tank, out of line of viewer sight - to protect baby shrimps as it's impenetrable by fish lol. The kuhlis are often in the pebble bed UNDER this plant so I am thinking this is the only location survival of a baby could have occured. It's near the filter intake as well so food is pulled into that general area ...

    Super happy!

TOUCH WOOD been a better week for the tank and everything seems back to how it used to be. Perhaps I had a mini-cycle that I totally missed or perhaps I was underfeeding my carnivores. I don't know. Last week was odd, but this is a GREAT sign!
