Back into Hobby
I'm just getting back into aquariums after a couple 10 gallon tanks as a kid and teenager. Many years later I've got a little more time and a LOT more disposable cash to help me along the way. I am 2 weeks into actually having fish in the tank and I'm already aspiring to a low-tech planted 75 gallon (dangerously obsessive hobby!). Fishless cycled with some help by lurking on this forum but after a stalled 7 week cycle (heavily treated municipal water supply), started over and tried some Dr. Tim's One and Only on a whim and it was the best thing I could have ever done. HIGHLY recommended! Completed in 10 days and, on the last day, I was fully converting a 4ppm in just under 24 hours, hence the full stock. The initially skeptical LFS employees were impressed after looking at the daily log I kept. Ace Hardware Ammonia and Dr Tim's created a toxin burning machine! Absolutely ZERO ammo or trites in 2 weeks with 25% WC after Week 1. Fishless concept is awesome. With the seemingly widespread acceptance of fishless cycling as the new norm I see on the internet, it surprises me to still find resistance to and/or ignorance about it at the LFS's and big box stores.
Aqueon fluorescent hood (Current USA LED Sat+/12000K moonlight strip/Dual ramp timer on the way)
Plastic plants (for now)
Twin AquaClear 50 HOBs both running at ~2/3 flow, 2 sponges and 1 biomax in each (In case of emergency, 1 gets cranked to full flow on the 29g while the other moves to the 10g QT at ~1/2 flow...insta-cycle...always wanted to do this but hopefully I never need to utilize it!).
5 Debauwi Cats (pretty but actually quite boring until feeding time and lights out)
5 Cherry Barbs (the party animals of tank)
3 Blue Variatus Platys (the nice neighbors of the tank)
1 Red Fire Honey Gourami (personality and laid back...my unexpected favorite )
(3 Otos once the tank matures and some algae sets in)

Hello and welcome.People say if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all... Then they wonder why am I so quiet.
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?

It is indeed a dangerously obsessive hobby. Welcome back, hope you find a deal on that 75 you're considering.
I have no experience with Debauwi cats, but I love catfish of all kinds and have done a huge amount of reading on the subject. I believe that species can be very timid and spend a lot of time hiding when kept in smaller groups, but can really come alive in larger schools. Perhaps if you do get 75 you can move them there and buy some more. Just a thought.
