  1. Default need advice on a peacock eel

    0 Not allowed!
so i picked up a 4 inch peacock eel yesterday at the local pet store. got home and went to add it to my tank ( 37 gallon) there was a little issue with him hoping out of the net on transfer but i finally got him in .. he went straight for the cave and buried himself in the pebbles (figured that would happen) anyway it has been 24 hours and he has yet to come out .. kind of a little worried there might be more going on here then just him being scared and shy...

Am i worrying over nothing or is there really something going on? and what should i do about it?

Can you see still see him and see that he is alive. In that case I would not worry. It is common that you do no see to much of them, especially during the first week.
Do as I say. Not as I do.

I just got my first peacock and he/she was a little shy and hid for the first 24hr but they are nocturnal hunters so they start to get brave and explore when it's dark. They are shy but if you have places for them to hide and foliage to make them feel safe they are happy.

+1to both above posts,if you get a 4 inch terra cotta pot unglazed and cut in half with a dremal you can put both in and the eel will probaly hid under those too.

do as I say, not as I do- William
I think if someone thinks clownfish are called nemos they should banned from keeping sw tank.

they like hollowed out logs and such. it will take awhile for peacock eels to become accustomed to a new tank. I would give it a week and let us know if it is eating after a few days.

I've had my peacock eel since March. He's survived several fish apocalypses with no problems at all. He hides when the tank light is on, but if it's off he'll come right out and explore. I've never seen him eat so my guess is they wait until they feel they aren't being watched. Definitely a hardy fish from what I've observed. A lot of the times they're buried with either just their nose or tail exposed. Don't be worried, I've gone a month before without seeing him and he's always fine. :)

Peacock eels(and most spiny eels) will hide most of the time. I had a one that after a few weeks started coming out but only at night. Then it started coming out at feeding time. After a few months I would see it cruising the tank even during the day. But others will only come out after dark, so them hiding for days at a time is completely normal.

Oh, those are pretty, hope he gets over his stage fright for you? Do you have any LED lights on your tank? I have LED with the option of "moon" lights for the evening, I can see my plecos and cory really moving around in the night. I just have to sit real still!
