Default A planted 4.5 gallon long shrimp + snail tank

I have a 4.5 gallon (about 16 litre) long glass tank. I'm eager to start a planted shrimp/snail tank but have a few questions.

    1. Would six cherry shrimps and two zebra nerite snails do well in this space?

    2. If I bought simple weed and moss plants, would they really need a light source? They would be in a bright room all day and I will use a layer of fertilizer soil under my substrate and add a liquid fertilizer weekly (I already do this to my tropical tank and the plants are great).

    3. I know I'll need a heater for my shrimp to breed happily. Would a simple one like this work well?

    4. Do I need a filter if I spot-check the tank daily and do a 50% change weekly? If I do need one, what low-voltage, non-powerful, relatively cheap one would you recommend?

    Thanks so much! :)

I can speak from experience that moss balls, anubias, and java moss will do just fine in that tank, with that lighting. Java fern should do well also, but since I don't have any, I'm just repeating what I've heard lol. I don't even dose ferts and my anubias put off new leaves.

It's my understanding that shrimp have a very low bioload, so they might be ok without a filter if there are a ton of plants, BUT, I'd still get a filter. You will need a current to keep the water from getting stagnant, and eventually the shrimp numbers will climb enough that you will need some extra BB.

With your stock, make sure you supplement their diet with algae tabs and fresh veggies. There won't be enough natural algae to go around.
20 gallon with a male betta, neons, glowlights, and red cherry shrimp. (work in progess) Recently added a few LIVE plants and driftwood, Woooohoooo!

you could probably get away with a sponge filter or even something like the tetra 10 gallon internal filter. if you want a HoB filter there is the aquaclear 20 - but make sure you turn the flow down probably for that size tank
