He's worried about big chunks clogging it up and then blocking up the filter.
40 gallon FW -1 male halfmoon betta named Max, 2 GBR's (Peter and Lois) who better clean up their act, 11neon tetras (damn GBR's killed one), 12 black neon tetras, 2 assassin snails, and 1 albino BN pleco named Tiberius.

I only add a few fish at a time, but perhaps I tend to be overly cautious.

Did you use the fishless cycle: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...ad.php?t=5640?

I'm sorry he's being the way he is, like I said I lived with somebody like that the first part of my life, maybe if you showed him some of the threads here, I don't know?

We started with gravel that already had a lot of BB in it. (Purchased in bulk from the LFS. It is what they use to start their tanks. We also got a free hitchhiking assassin snail!! Bonus!) Then, we added prime and a raw shrimp and let him decay and get all kinds of nasty for a few weeks. We checked the levels throughout and watched the ammonia spike and fall, then nitrite spike and fall, then nitrate spike and fall.

Ammonia and nitrite have been 0 ever since. They didn't even go up when we added the new fish. We did our first PWC a week after adding the fish and only a 10% when we did it. During that PWC I vacuumed about 25% of our gravel lightly.

He's not usually like this. I already told him I was going to start a thread to ask and make sure about what should be done and he said he didn't care what anyone had to say about it. :( I may try to talk to him about this again in a calm manner tomorrow after we are both calmed down.

Worst case scenario, if I can't talk him out of doing this, what will happen to the tank? Will I just need to do more PWC? Ugh.

I have to disagree with this if I am understanding right. The tank was fishless cycled, then the first batch of fish was added. It has been three weeks since the first batch and this is batch #2 that we are talking about.

In the three weeks between batch number 1 and batch number 2 the BB may well have "leveled off" to the point that there isn't enough to support a large batch of fish being added all at once.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think adding them in smaller groups is safer.

In terms of your husband, one thing he should know is that none of the media in the filter really should require replacing very often. Whatever this "white layer" is won't need to be replace until it is literally falling apart.

I too have a very stubborn husband who often insists on things being done his way. If I can afford to I just let him learn the hard way, but where the safety and balance of your tank is at risk, perhaps a compromise is in order. Tell him you will let him clean the filter how he wants but only if he lets you choose how many and in what order the remaining fish are added. Then you can just add the hardiest fish first in a smaller group.

I definitely recommend waiting I the GBRs until the very last. They can be so sensitive.

Oh also sorry for all the yammering but if you do rinse the filter that way and decide to add all the fish, it's not going to ruin everything. It will just make more work for you. It could kick you back into a cycle meaning you will possibly have to perform daily water changes (depending on how much ammonia you get) until the filter has a chance to catch up to the new bioload. That can take a couple weeks depending on how severely your ammonia spikes.

Well CL, I didn't have the benifit of reading the later posts, when I gave that advice, but it's all good, LOL. Anyway + 1 to all your advice here, maybe Jenalee's husband will be in better mood tomorow to listen to it.

Haha she said that in her first post, but I suspected you just skimmed as I tend to be guilty of doing as well. Just wanted to clear up confusion.
