  1. Default Cleaning filter...HELP!

    0 Not allowed!
The hubby and I are getting into a massive disagreement over this topic. I would really appreciate your help in letting us know the proper way to clean our filters.
We have the Rena Filstar XP1. The tank has been set up for a little over a month and a half now. We have the fish listed in my siggie only and this weekend will make 3 weeks that they have been in the tank. We did a full fishless cycle before adding them in. I have been doing weekly water testing and the numbers have always looked great.

This weekend, we are going to do a 50% PWC and then go get the remainder of our fish, 2GBR's, 12 neons, 2 dwarf gouramis, and a guppy.

While we are doing the PWC, hubby wants to clean out the filter. I told him we are supposed to only use tank water to clean it out b/c we don't want to lose any of our good bacteria that we have worked so hard for. He is insisting that he will be using the sprayer and clean water to spray out the 1st white layer on the bottom only. He says he won't be messing with anything else, but because that layer catches all the big stuff in the tank he wants to make sure it is really clean. I keep telling him that this isn't right and he needs to use tank water only per what I have been reading.

He said that we shouldn't ever throw the cycle off just by cleaning this one tiny piece and does NOT seem open to any other input whatsoever. Can you please reassure me that we aren't going to screw up our tank by doing this? His argument is that when we have to replace that part of the filter with a new one it is no different. My argument is that we still have a really new tank.

I know the GBR's are really sensitive to water changes so I want to know in advance before we do this.

We are both brand new at doing this.

Clean the "1st white layer" in tank water only, that you have taken from the tank before the PWC. Do this in a seperate bowl from the bowl you will use to keep your bio media wet while cleaning the filter.

Until you have a well established tank, there is no reason to risk losing any more BB than you have to. ESPECIALLY if you intend on adding more fish any time soon.

Well, you both are kind of right.

your husband's approach is what I would do for my own heavily colonized filter, but in the case of a newly cycled filter,
the overall amount of bacteria is not high and even blasting out a single piece of media may be a minor setback to your cycle.

I would recommend against adding so many fish at one time, particularly into a new tank.

+ 1 to Slap, he made some realy good points especialy rinsing in tank water only, you can always treat and replace the tank water with tapwater.

Basicly we are telling you, you are right. Husband sounds like my Dad used to, "going to do it his way or else", LOL!!

And I just realized that I didn't answer your question. I always use only tank water for cleaning filter media, regardless of how long the filter has been established.

I have told him that about the cycle and the tank water and he said he didn't care what I was being told. He was going to do it anyways. He is refusing to listen to me on this issue at all. His issue is wanting power behind the water. So, if you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this, that would REALLY help me out!

Should we just add the neons only this week and then the remainder the week after?

If the tanks been cycled right, she should be able to add the amount she wants.

Oh good! We made sure it completed a full cycle before adding any fish, then we added the 7 we have now and will have waited 3 weeks with every other day water testing before we add more.

That seems like a better approach to me. I have no idea what to tell you about dealing with someone who refuses to listen to reason. High pressure water is not needed for cleaning filter media. Gentle rinsing does the job. As new as your filter is, I would probably not clean it at all yet.
