I'm about to increase the surface area in one of my filters for biological bacteria colonies to grow, due to my intended increase in stocking for my 75gal. Over the last two years, I've been using ceramic media and Seachem Matrix, which is just porous rock. Matrix is supposed to accommodate more bio bacteria, due to its extensive surface area. According to Seachem, Matrix outperforms plastic bio-balls by about 170 times (ie - 1L of matrix = 170L of bio-balls). I don't know that there's really any truth to that. It could be clever advertising.

My recent thought is to begin using lava rock. I've read that it yields a great deal of surface area, due to how porous it is. I can tell you that Matrix is certainly not as porous as lava rock, so my thought is that lava rock probably outperforms it.

As mentioned, I have a mixture of bio-media in my tanks, using ceramic rings and the matrix, but I'm certainly not above trying something else. Lava rock is certainly more affordable and visually very porous. It's obvious to me that it can hold a great deal of bb.

Anyway, I just wanted to get the opinion of the community. I doubt that any of the options are a bad media to use, but if something can be more efficient than other options, I'd certainly prefer to use that.

I have ceramic media for two of my tanks and lava rock for a third and have no issues with any. The two tanks with ceramic media are very lightly stocked at the moment and the one with the lava rock has 4 adult Texas cichlids. All tanks have a very strong cycle. I can wash the mechanical part of the filtration in tap water and never have ammonia or nitrite spikes.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I use ceramic rings and sponges in my 4 HOBs...since you peeps here at AC convinced me that carbon was not needed.

And to see if I have enough BB in ceramic rings alone, I will try washing my sponges in tap as mommy1 suggested above^.

Do this ONLY if your tanks are very mature! My tanks have been running in their current set-up for 2-4 years.

my water was clearer after I removed the carbon and replaced with the ceramic media as well. In fact my 6 week calendar reminder (since I put the biomax on one side of the filter) just came up today to do the other side. So may do that tonight.

I have been using only biomax (ceramic rings) for biological filtration for about 4 years now on my current 90 gallon tank. Been working great for me

Looks like ceramic is leading the way, but I'm glad to hear that lava rock is also being used. I'm really curious about trying it out.

@mommy1, do you use the smaller gravel-like lava rocks or do you use the charcoal-sized variety? I imagine that's a dumb question, but figured I'd ask. ;P

Not a dumb question. I use golf ball size chunks give or take. They fill two of the three baskets in a Rena XP3.
