Hey I;m getting sand for my new 55 gal tank I found some sand I like and they offer it in .25 to 1mm grain sized to 1 to 2mm grain size. I would rather get the finer stuff, my tank is 21 inches high will this be enough to prevent sand from getting sucked in and high enough that the filter output is not enough to move the sand? my filter dose not go down very deep only about 7 inches so will 14 inches be enough space that the sand will not shift? any ways thanks for the help I'm kinda stressing about this new yank i want everything perfect so leave your opinion on what size is best.

P.S. This is going to be a tropical tank with lots of cardinals and cory cats.

Either size should not shift. I like the finer sand.

a filter intake ideally should go down deep to move the water throughout the tank, otherwise you would only be circulating only the top layer, potentially leading to dead spots and the Associated health problems.
with that, such fine sand as .25-1 mm could easily get stirred up by fish or during maintenance and damage the filter.
