  1. Default I need a background!

    Howdy,

I have had my 20g tall set up for quite a while now, and it is improving slowly on the aquascape, but I am sick of looking at my cords and wall through the tank. So, I was wondering...

What paint is best to use on the glass tank? I have fish inside already.

    Should I go plain black?

Is painting it a good choice? Other suggestions? I'm really trying to go cheap on this, otherwise I'd buy a printed background for an insane amount of money, lol.

Here's the tank to help with suggestions. :)

We bought a plain black background from our LFS for about $6. One side was blue and one side was black. We taped it to the outside of the tank and it hides the cords perfectly! Then you aren't stuck with a black back in the future if you want to change it.

Plus 1 to Jenalee. You can also hit Office depot or such and pick up bristol board colour of your choice for cheap. Tape it on and your good to go. When you want to change colours it's easier to remove then paint.

    Good advice so far!

If I did posterboard, how do you stop it from getting water damage?

If I do plastic, how do I stop water from creating marks if it gets between the tank and plastic?

This seems stupid...but do I just use scotch tape? :)

thats all I did is use scotch tape. I haven't noticed any water on mine yet as long as you got a lid and a non leaking tank you shouldn't either.

plus with it being as cheap as it is if it does get wet 3 - 6+ months later it is dirt cheap to replace it.

on my 10 gallon there was enough material to cut out 3 backgrounds that I also saved.

    ^^^

Exactly what I did. Went to target, picked up about 3 big pieces of poster board and cut to my liking. I outfitted a 40gal, and 2 x 20gal and never got to my 3rd one for some reason.

These are the reasons I chose to paint my 90 gallon. I had black backgrounds taped on my 10. Call me clumsy but I always dripped water on the back when trying to clean or adjust filters and once my aquaclear even leaked down the back of my tank. I hated the look of the tape and hated replacing it.

I didn't put much thought into the paint I used tbh. I visited my dad and rummaged through his garage where I found 3 or 4 nearly used up cans of matte black spray paint. I just started throwing that on until no light shone through and it all looked even. I'm pleased with how it looks and I'll only paint my tanks in future.

I would imagine it would be quite an undertaking if you ended up wanting to change it one day.

Well you should buy a plain blue or black background they cost like 6 bucks or you can cut a black trash bag to size and tape that on they both work pretty good.

If you buy a printed background, they make this stuff called "Clearview" that comes in a tube kind of like a giant glue stick. Its an oily adhesive that you can use to apply the background, and squish out all the air bubbles to make it really stick very flatly to the back. (it kind of has a texture like spray on cooking oil)

It will make your background adhere, but when you are ready to take it off, you will be able to peel it away. Its significantly better than tape for how your background sticks and looks on the tank, imo.
