  1. Default *** URGENT *** Power Outages Expected

I have two 55 gal tanks, one community and one with cichlids

I live in Atlanta and there are ice storm warnings with potential of power outages that will last a few days. How can I protect the two tanks without a filter or heater

Your main probleme is going to be heat and toxicity. Heat is a problem as long as the power is out and toxicity once they come back.

What kind of heat do you use in your house. If you can hold the temperature in the house up then that might be enough to keep your fish alive. Most cichlids can handle lower temperatures for a limited amount of time. Without knowing which species you keep in your community tank it is harder to give advice. If you use electric heating in your home you will have a problem. A solution might be if you can get battery backup for the heater. If you will need to use an alternative heat source during the power outages. Choose to keep the room with the tanks warm and sleep in there. That will not only help the tanks it will also make the heating cheaper as the aquariums will buffer heat and help keep the temperature of the room up.

Toxicity can build up in the filtere while the power is out (oxygen deficiency) and you should therefore ideally clean the filter well before the heat comes back. This might upset the cycling but that is still preferable over pumping toxin into the water.
Do as I say. Not as I do.

My community tank has albino cats, neons, black mollie, German blue ram, rainbow fish, red platy.

My cichlid tank had two electric yellow labs.

We have gas heat, without a heater the tanks temperature will probably drop to about 65

if electricity fails, try wrapping all manners of towels and clothes around the tank, and also try insulating bottoms and tops.
ideally, find some way to at least aerate the tank. there are battery powered air pumps designed for such emergencies. if you need the batteries to last, maybe try alternately aerating
and then not for several hours.

It may be kind of late in atlanta to get to stores with supplies, people have been making a run on such things all day. but an airpump/stone and heater connected to computer battery backups would give you some time as well if you did it in intervals after the power goes out if you have something like that

above advice is all good. keep a close eye on your water temp.

this is why I like to run sponge filters. they can keep your tank cycled with a battery operated air pump.

If you do get a battery powered air pump, try taking the filter media out of your filter and place it inside the tank near the flow the airline will create. This can help to keep your water safer as well as helping to keep the bacteria in your filter alive
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

apparently the south is getting rocked hard by the ice storm - over 100,000 customers in Georgia alone (and growing) are without power. Ice can be a nasty beast that's for sure. We had an ice storm in the city south of me last spring, it took 5 or 6 days to get power back and 2 months to clear up the branches and other stuff it left behind.

Great advice. so far so good! although I live on a hill and it is a solid sheet of ice so I am not going anywhere for at least 2 days. Was not able to get a battery powered "anything"

Just for my own education, what causes toxicity to build up in the filter vs the water column as a whole? Is it because the BB dies off and that releases even more waste?
