    Default Securing driftwood?

    0 Not allowed!
Hey guys so I'll be setting up a new 10 gallon in the next week or two and I was wondering if you guys thought my method for securing my driftwood would work. Okay so my idea is to take the Beech tree branches, that I collected, and secure them to the back wall of the tank using aquarium silicone. I'm trying to position the branches to look like tree roots growing down into the water, because the branches are so small they don't sink. Would attaching them to the tank wall using silicone work?

Depending on the size and how "badly" they want to float, it may work...do you have pics of the branches?

Another alternative, would be to anchor the tips to a piece of slate, either with screws or silicone. The slate can then be buried in your substrate.

I was going to suggest that, but I thought the OP wanted the tips of the branches above the substrate

+1, this does work. Make sure you use stainless steel screws. I usually will just soak wood until it's no longer buoyant, but you may not want to wait so long.

I'll have to take some pictures when I get home from class but yes it wouldn't be plausible to anchor the branches to slate. The biggest branch only has a diameter of about a 1/2". It'd be nearly impossible to drill screws into them without them breaking or getting ruined. I'd prefer to wait for them to lose their buoyancy, but as I mentioned earlier, they're so light-weight and small that they probably won't lose their buoyancy at all. I'll take some pictures today when I get home and depending on if I think they need it again I'll bake them one last time and then put them in a bucket of hot water to soak until I decide to set up the tank, hopefully before then they'll be ready but I'm not too sure.

Nvm I had some spare time so here's a picture of the 3 pieces of wood I want to use in the tank, there's a ruler there for scale.

I would cut it on an agle that fits best against the glass, and silicone it. best if you can fix the wood to the bottom of the tank aswell as the back. Make sure youre using aquarium safe silicone too.

If you can anchor with silicone to glass, you can anchor with silicone to slate.

    Either should work.

I was suggesting the slate as an alternative because it would make the decoration a bit more mobile for redecorating or cleaning situations.

Does your wood still have bark on it? You might want to consider removing it if so. Bark tends to rot pretty rapidly in water and would foul your water.
