    I can really relate to that feeling. I'm enjoying following this thread.
    I've been unsure of the lighting needs for my 60g freshwater tank too.

    I just ditched my last incandescent hood. Seemed like whatever I did there would be so much humidity in the hood that the sockets would go bad and the bulbs wouldn't work.

    So far the compact fluorescents in my 10g seem great. I think actually it might be a bit to much light for the floating frogbit, it seems to do better when the water level is lower. The led that came with my little 2.6 g seems good enough for the low light plants I have in there as well. The frogbit is really thriving in there.
