Best thing I can recommend is research, research, and research. And I don't mean just on the internet, go to the library and used book stores, books still contain alot of great information believe it or not, LOL, and sites like this are great, I've learned some new things here and I'm old, LOL.

You are right that one of the main issues is that the average reasonable person doesn't see the large versions of fish and so don't think about bowls int he same way.

I saw this image the other day...and frankly this is the kind of simple action it would be great if more places employed.

That is awesome! My dads cousins family (not sure what that makes them to me) have a 50 gallon with 4 very large goldfish in it. They thought they were only suppose to live a year or two and stay in there 10 gallon they had them in. As they grew they upgraded when needed. I would say there probably 6-7 inches now. Don't know how old. Atleast 6 years. Wish my LFS would warn people properly about the adult size of fish.
37g Freshwater 1 Angelfish, 1 Blue Rams, 10 Cherry Barbs, 6 Cardinals, 1 Bristlenose Pleco.

    We were doing it wrong.

I remember the goldfish from the fair, and I remember the night my sister won some. Many new things can seem difficult at first, I also remember learning to ride a bike, but the more you dig into this hobby the easier it gets, just like riding a bike. Even stamp collecting can be difficult at first if you don't know which stamps are worth collecting. What I have learned in my 40+ years in this hobby is anything worth doing is worth doing well. You could stick to your old ways of only changing a bit of water and feeding the fish and your fish might even live a year or two. Or, you could research a little, ask questions, and learn a bit of the wealth of knowledge we have learned since those old days of goldfish from the fair and enjoy your fish for many years. Those of us here who have been in this hobby for many years sometimes forget how overwhelming it can be for new people. But stick with it, ask us what you need to know and many of us here are happy to help you cipher through all the confusion. Most of all remember, once that tank is cycled, all you have to do is change some water once a week, test now and then, and feed the fish.

When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

why people put goldfish in bowls.
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

There are so many things wrong with that picture it isn't even funny. Wonder how many fish they clobbered in that commercial.
    Current tanks:

it wasn't supposed to be. it's sad really, just for one commercial they probably ended up causing the death of fish.
just posted it to show people what most people think is acceptable

that was my wife was originally wanting to do when my kid wanted a fish for his birthday Just a 1 gallon bowl and a goldfish. Didn't even consider the filter, gravel, etc - I ended up buying the 37 gallon tank instead and it is sense starting to spread.

People were putting Goldfish in bowls long before 2009. The major pet retailers continue to sell fish bowls. Which to me, since that is where you go when you are interested in potentially keeping a fish is a much greater concern than a car commercial.

However, if you want to do something about that commercial, then send a reasoned letter to the Ad Agency and Kia and tell them why its inappropriate.

That's the commercial I was talking about. It's upsetting to me because that the car I have my mind set on for when I turn 16. (If I can afford it by then) not only is it a goldfish in a bowl, he tosses it in there! No floating in the bag. No water testing. No acclimating. I give the fish 2 days sadly. We should all start an organization or something. I'm sure there already is some but they're not doing that great obviously...
