I've discovered that I have about 20 of these running around my Ancistrus breeding tank.

I have no idea what they are and I'm concerned about any effects they may have on my fry. The fry are currently 1,3cm long.

Will these be beneficial or harmful?

Any info on this snail would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

Looks like a average pond snail to me. They should not bother your fry, but I think they will eat fish eggs

If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Thank you! At least I don't need to worry about them at the moment.

Once my fry are all grown up I will introduce my Clown Loach to that tank. He will probably be very happy hunting snails :)

but you may want something that eats them. They breed like they are radioactive super rabbits. I had one pond snail multiply to well over 50 in 2 months (from what I can count on the glass), I can't wait for my assassin snails to get here.

I think it may be a ramshorn snail. I cannot really tell much from the shell shape from this angle, but the tentacles of pond and bladder snails are much shorter and thicker, and I am not aware of pink pond snails either. Either way, they reproduce quite fast under ideal circumstances, but ramshorns may stay a tad smlaller and are easier to crush if your fish ever desire escargot.

Will a Clown Loach not be able to keep up?

I don't think I have anything else that will hunt them.

Depends on the size of the tank. Clown loaches from what I read get rather large - nearly a foot in size or bigger and prefer groups (as point out in the Loaches Primer here - http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...ad.php?t=27094)

I often see people here recommended them. I was about to inquire about them as well till I read that thread and poked my head in aqadvisor. The other option would to be to grab 5 assassin snails, Triton sells them for cheap.

How big is this tank? You do know how large clown loaches get right, and they will go after the fry and eggs? You might be better off introducing some assassin snails.

I agree with madagascar, looks like some type of ramshorn...like the others said, they really are more a nuisance than anything, but they breed like crazy

Not sure if you can acquire assassin snails in your location, but that would be your best deterrent to having the tank overrun with them..I don't believe that one loach will be able to keep up with the population explosion you may very quickly have

I do know how big they can get. He currently lives in a 200L tank where he schools with 4 corydoras. He was bought as a snail deterrent whilst I established my planted tank. That tank is not far from completion. He will then either be returned to the store or he willl be rehomed in my friend's 600L. He is currently 6cm long.

I was given some Hornwort to help control nitrates in a 135L breeding tank. The snails were on there. There are only ancistrus fry and snails in that tank
