I read about an old "salty" trick about using an uncooked shrimp in a filter media or on a veggie clip placed in a freshly started tank will cause the cycle to start by allowing the shrimp to float in the water and allow it to "Rot" causing ammonia in the water and starting the cycle.
These are pictures from three weeks ago when I filled this tank that is now my new quarantine tank. First water test showed ammonia starting to develop. Shrimp has desolved by almost 1/3. Left the bag attached to a large air stone to agitate it in a low flow and add plenty of oxygen to the water.
    Thoughts on this method?

I seen others mention that to work, you may get a smell to it though. Most people prefer using ACE ammonia or something similar but that is not always readily available. Other method is to sprinkle in wish food and let it rot.

It works... but what a waste of a delicious shrimp!

If you can dose pure ammonia, then you don't have to wait out the rotting time, but if you can't find ammonia, the raw shrimp or fish foods will work.

if you do use pure ammonia though, just make sure you get the dosing in the syringe in a very well ventilated area (like outside) that can do nasty stuff to you if you are not careful. I have the misfortune of having asthma. One brief whiff of that stuff even for less than a second when doing the first dose was enough for me to be reaching for my inhaler, had a headache for a few hours and general irritation in my sinuses as well.

So far no odor unless you put your nose up to the HOB filter cover. Tea bag method also seems to keep waste from floating in tank. Using pure ammonia or a starter is nice but if you buy fresh shrimp and cut a head off and place in a tea bag to start the process you don't waste anything. All other parts end up in trash or in my case the compost pile.

Out of curiosity.... if you've kept track of your water readings from testing... that would be interesting to see.

Mostly to see how high in ppm and over what time frame the raw shrimp method develops.

I will save a copy of my test sheet to a PDF to make it easier to share. Photo will be hard to read with the smaller columns but I will do that. Just bought a new API master kit when I started so I have plenty of test chems to monitor levels and will keep a photo journal aswell.

Many years ago, I did try cycling with a pc of raw shrimp.

I think I used too big of a pc because the whole room stuck after about 4 days. Good thing it was summer and I could open a window. Did did seam to work tho, even tho I had short mini spike after I started adding fish

It certainly dose work, many people have cycled tanks that way. Many years ago it used to be a real popular method to start cycling a tank before adding fish. I do prefer to use pure ammonia only because it is a lot easier to control the ammonia levels.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Using pure ammonia seems easier to me, but I've never tried the shrimp method..no need to, actually..any fresh shrimp that enters my house gets devoured by yours truly

We sometimes get high count shrimp ( very small) and the head is only about 6mm. Cycling now 16 days and odor has never occurred even with house closed up tight since we started getting snow in November. Another great thing with this hobby is you never need a humidifier.
