  1. Default Underrated or misunderstood fish

What are your favorite fish that you either don't see in shops near you, or that you don't hear much about despite them being great fish? (Opinions will obviously vary.)

Mine are Odessa Barbs. I don't see them in the shops around here very often (I had to order mine), and when I have seen them in a store, they are fairly drab and don't even look like the same fish. Mine probably took a month or two to really color up, but I've had them for a couple of years, and now they're stunning.

I know this is rather broad but I would say that any of the US native fish. Especially shiners and darters. Most of the people that keep these have to go catch them. The only native fish I've seen in shops are Gars and these really aren't suited for fish tanks. I live in TN and researching the different species that live here has really opened up a whole new world or fish keeping. Saffron, warpaint, bleeding, and green head shiners. Blue side, green side, rainbow, and tangerine darters. Just to name a few. Once my son is old enough to go fish hunting with me I'd love to start a native tank up.

I have to say Killis. Many people don't know much about them and you don't see many in local shops.

My super underrated fish is quite ubiquitous, but no one seems to have a good opinion on them, preferring to skip them over for tetras. I am speaking of the White Cloud Mountain minnow. It's been in the hobby for a while, but no other fish I know beats this combination of availability, cheapness, extreme hardiness, versatility, behavior, peacefulness, and to add to all this, beauty. Fish in stores look drab, but after some good care their true colors show and then IMO they beat most commonly available schoolers. Healthy fish don't just hang around in the bushes like some characins, males constantly spar and chase females.

I agree with you about White Clouds; I've had some for four years that have been bulletproof (I had an ich outbreak and none of them were even affected), and they exhibit more interesting behavior than any tetra I've ever kept. Their sparring is also spectacular.

Ive never seen a kili in a shop... also I have only been to 1 shop that carried any type of appistogramma. Heck even Honduran red points (the prettier and less tempermental version of a convict) arent found commonly... The fresh water aquarium trade sucks in a lot of areas and has been dominated by big box stores that carry weak fish and a small variety.

Diamond tetras are so drab when they are young, it takes till they are almost full grown before they show how attractive they can be.

See TWS is tough for me since adding $30 to a fish order (usually only a few) really makes the prices nuts. Thats the only reason I haven't ordered from them yet

I have to go in on a 1k order or so to justify the shipping. Same with my discus orders. I order based on filling an entire tank or 4.
