    Default Entertaining The Cats...

I just wanted to introduce myself. I am very new to this hobby; after having a Betta for quite a few years, my significant other and I just picked up a 10g aquarium and put our first fish in it this last weekend. We have a Dwarf Gourami and three "Tequila Sunrise" Delta Guppies.

We started this journey at PetSmart, where we got pretty sound advice from the clerk who told us to fill the tank and come back in a week with a water sample. We did this, and after finding out the tank wasn't ready, decided to get an basic API test set and some starter bacteria. I didn't add the whole bottle, but instead just added a little bit of it, and introduced the Betta to the tank after reading that they did well in a new tank. Sure enough the following week, we took our first samples and pH was 7.5 (same as tap) and everything else was zero except nitrate (Which is a bit hard to read but we called it 30ppm). So we replaced some of the water and headed to the store.

After introducing the new fish to their tank, we noticed that the Betta was definitely more active in the tank with the filter and head. So, we are upgrading the Betta's habitat to include a light, filter, and heat stick in the hopes he'll be happier in that environment.

I definitely can see how this hobby could be addictive. It is too bad we couldn't get the 20g tank--I didn't trust our IKEA furniture to support it.

We're probably going to head to the store to pick up 2 more fish as our final addition once the tank stablizes--maybe 2 weeks. Maybe some middle swimmers, and I'd like to fit another biggish one if I can, but only have 3.5" to work with, so we'll see. We'll probably end up getting 3 more 1" schooling fish.

Well, that is the most I've ever written about fish.

Oh, and I should mention. The fish are to entertain the cats, but don't worry. They just like to stare. Under supervision we've taken the lid off and the worst they do is drink the water. Which is odd because they really don't usually drink water.
