Wait, isn't that just the updated version to this? Encyclopedia of Tropical Fishes by Axelrod

lol... there are too many fish books with similar names by authors of similar names or same names. You can see why I didn't just buy up any old thing before. ;P

I think you made a wise purchase because this one is indeed an update, hopefuly it will cover the newer fish like it says. One of the comments on not liking the book was that it did not go into to much detail on the individule species.

I see Axelrod's son is involved in this one, I believe the old man is still in jail for tax evasion if you can believe that, LOL.

Ok, good deal. I saw some of the negative reviews, but the one by Phil carried some weight, so I took that into consideration. Of course, they could be friends, so who knows. lol

A tax evader, eh? I guess he was early to the Tea Party. We should all start tax evading.

I remember the first time I saw the Emperor tetra in a book I had to have it, that was 1973, I finaly got to keep them in 1985 and as they are now fairly common and are always the staple of my tank.

So what is the "white whale" or fish you have always wanted to keep but have never been able to find it?

As some of you know, mine is the Red lined tetra or Hyphessobrycon amapaensis.

Discus are pretty elusive, if you ask me. They're never available at LFS and you almost always have to order them online. Of course, they're easily accessible online, because so many people breed them... I haven't really come across a fish I've wanted, but haven't been able to find, yet. Though, I've only been in the hobby for 2 years, so I'm still getting to know what fish are available.

The reason you dont see many discus is beacue the people who know discus will go to Hans (for stenker) and Kenny for asians. The local fish store marks up 300% and usually gets crap stock combined with them not knowing their requirements so they kill more than they sell and their profit margin is crap. It takes a shop to have their own breeding project to really honestly make good money at a fair price.

TWS gets them in but they are 25/2in fish... for commons. There was one place called world of wet pets that got me 2in fish for 10/fish in portland. They have good fish there but get them from less than reputable sources. They just know how to weed through the crap.
