    that's one thing i didn't do or know to do . when i got the heaters i just put them in the tank and slowly raised the temp

    yes all heaters have to be placed in the water for a minimum of 20 minutes before even plugging it in. it can be set to whatever temp you want but you have to acclimate them to the water first, just like you do with fish.
    Current tanks:
    37G FW - 3 Pearl Gourami, 4 Black Mollies, approximately 20+ Molly Fry, 5 Assassin Snails | 10G Planted FW - 14 Molly Fry, rocks, DW and an Anubias Nana - journal

    At least with glass heaters, you risk shattering the glass or shorting it otherwise.

    I would give a good quality heater, such as a Hagen or Fluval, one more shot...with the info you've learned above, I bet a decent heater will last you for years...and you have SO many more options for fishkeeping with a heated tank

    Apparently they can, they have in your situation...but "tolerate" and "thrive" are two different things...

    My 10 gallon has many platys, they are all happy, healthy, and readily breeding, and the tank stays at 79F
