Either that or a weird shift in your water supply are the most likely options. PErsonally I'd say the latter.

I ended up putting the background up and didn't move the tank because it was hard to get power to the closet. While the background is helping it's not doing much. Algae is growing back again! If there is something in my talk water why ate my platies fine! Man this is weird

Platies are fairly hardy fish, neons and your Ram are very sensitive to changes in water parameters as has been stated above. Platies usually handle water parameter changes with ease.

i have looked up our cities water supply and found nothing much.
what am i supposed to do now?
i am still doing water changes.
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

i woke up today to my ram on it's side with his body curved. he was still breathing and moving when it wanted to.
at this point i don't think he will make it :(. im quite upset now. i should euthanize it but i don't have the heart to do that.
but somewhere i read that a slanted or curved body is a fish disease. i think it starts with a d. or i am thinking with of something completely different

You don't have the heart to put it out of its misery and euthanize the fish, but you can sit by and watch it die slowly? I don't understand people and the way they think sometimes.

You are probably thinking of fish TB. A curved spine is ONE symptom of fish TB, ulcers, sores, and emaciated body being others. I don't think your fish has TB but is a victim of his environment.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

vafa I agree with mommy1 above post 100%. Do not let a creature suffer that has no chance of living.

it has been a week since my ram died :( . there has been no deaths except in my other tank for a seprate reason i don't want to bore you guys with. although i am not going to add any fish soon (2 weeks), i would like to find a center piece fish for my 20 gallon. i don't want to get another ram, i don't just want to replace my dead fish. the ph in my tank is 7.6, but our city water is very soft, according to other people i have communicated with. they add a chemical to buffer the ph that is 5.5 out of the river. this chemical is stable, and seems to not affect my fish. my tank is lightly-moderately planted.
current stocking is 9 neon tetra, and 2 Otto's. any idea's? i want something around 3 inches in size that is available in most LFS.
    thank you in advance
