Thread: Germen Blue Ram

  1. Default Germen Blue Ram

For those with experience with the Germen Blue Rams, does my current setup and fish stock leave room for a GBR? Local fish store currently have them on sale and their such beautiful looking fish, would love to pick one up. Questions welcomed.

If we're talking about your 25gal, it seems like you're already fully stocked. You can probably get away with it, if you keep on your weekly water changes (probably 35-50% every week). Since the GBR is a bottom dweller, it would be fine to have him in that tank with the others. I just feel like adding something else would be a bit much, especially since the hatchets aren't in a full school. Are you planning on getting rid of them?

Bio load wise, it would put you in the heavily stocked zone, but still well within what is feasible. However, compatibility wise, your dwarf gourami may have severe objections to the ram, depending on its personality.

I would like to remove the hatched's as their no longer appealing. They don't do much, even when they were in a group of 6. Pretty much stayed in the same area. Though I don't have anyone near to take them. Did you factor in the 10 gal sump tank? With water displacement and all I figure there's probably a total of about 32 gallons running through the system. Thank you for your input though, it helps alot to get advice from here.

Personality of the Ram or gourami? Can you be a little more specific? What am I looking for? Thanks for your input too.

    Well....
Both of them I guess. They both are territorial fish with varying tempers between individuals. If you happen to have Ana greasiest gourami or get an aggressive ram, then it may be inclined to chase the other.

I've had a GBR with my Gourami and they were fine, but my gourami is actually quite docile. My GBR was a tyrant, but he acted that way toward my Serpaes and the other GBR I had (until it died - probably because of the other GBR). I wouldn't worry too much about them, unless your Gourami has an established territory lower in the tank. Mine doesn't... it's all over the place, but rarely swims in the lower area of the tank, unless it's eating. Of course, that's a 75gal tank, too... so much more territory.

You should be fine on bioload. Didn't keep the extra 10gal in mind. However, you're limited on space. A GBR's territory can be vast or limited.

i wouldn't, only because of the gourmai. some german blue rams like mine don't even allow a single platy in the tank( like mine) and others will allow anything. same thing goes with the gourmai. it's likely that one won't like the other, especially in the a 25 gallon
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

So I picked up my first GBR Saturday. All is looking good so far. The gourami typically stays towards the top as it has always, the Ram towards the bottom. I have not seen any ill behavior from the Ram towards other fish. In fact I find him (or maybe her?) schooling with the tetras. The tetras seem to ignore him, the platy's are curious. Hope this behavoir stays for all my fish.

Would you consider filling out your silver hatchets to a propper school? you are fine having a gbr in this tank.
