    If all you want to do is have low light plants, go to home depot, get the $10 light fixture and use t8 bulbs at 6500k on a glass top. Much less hastle for a simple low light system.
    FW: 1 45gal, 1 40gal, 3 10gal, 3 30gal all community tanks of different species

    what $10 light fixture? looking for a cheap setup for my 10gallon as well. a simple light strip from the LFS with a bulb is like $30
    Current tanks:
    37G FW - 3 Pearl Gourami, 4 Black Mollies, approximately 20+ Molly Fry, 5 Assassin Snails | 10G Planted FW - 14 Molly Fry, rocks, DW and an Anubias Nana - journal

    basically its 18 LEDs @ mixed 6500K, 6600K, 6700K (they have different white leds and I have the option to choose which ones) + 4 reds @ 630nm .. I can choose which angle to put as well .. shall I go for a 120degrees?

    Option #2 doesn't list the wattage or angle of lenses used so it is tough to offer a informed opinion. But it should be OK for mosses and very low light plants in a 21 inch (55cm) tall aquarium like yours. You might need 3 unit though, but you could try one, see how it goes, and add a second later. But then again, there is a pretty good chance I could be way off without knowing the wattage and lens angles
    its 8.5W .. am sending to ask about the angle.

    Option #3A looks like it is meant to bed used in a DIY fixture. while the color temp is goodand the brand / wattage of the LEDs is good, you will still need to buy a power supply, controller, lenses, heat-sinks, and put it all together in a canopy or fixture body
    I was under the impression you can use these out of the box. Have one similar for Xmas decorations. Is the lenses & fixture needed? fixing it with tape to the glass will not do the trick?

    Option #3B is still a another one better suited for a marine set-up. You really need to get one with 7000 K or less color temp. Even if you choose the all white LED option, the lowest listed color temp is 12,000K.

    Sorry if I am raining on your parade, but I would not buy any one of them
    The seller is saying: Specification:
    Power:36W;
    Size: 60CM;
    Price:$29.12/pc
    LED Type /Number:3W*12Pcs;
    Color: white and red:6 : 1 : 5(11pcs white and 1pcs red).
    color temperature of white :3000-20000k
    wavelength of red :630nm

    I have asked her to make it 6600K and she said ok.

    Am I correct in aiming for 20W+ 6600K and Red @ 630nm?

    There is also this option: MG-36 36W 600*117*25mm 2 modules in 1 row Epistar 30°/60°/90° 6500K-15000K 1620lm $64.20 - http://eusiwa.en.alibaba.com/product...ontroller.html

    mixed at the ratio of 18:4 6500K White : 630nm red

    Or this option : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-tube-l...item2575e526f3

    I also enquired about this @ http://www.aliexpress.com/item/T8-25...416792215.html but still need to get the info. What worries me about the T8s is the diameter due to the glass structure

    Many thanks all for your help - it is much appreciated!!

    I think Sandz is referring the the below. I have used them with success in FW panted set-ups before when used with CFL bulbs. Cheap, easy, and you can grow low demanding plants

    If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

    any kind of fixture or stand for it? wouldn't mind doing a diy light fixture for my little 10 gallon with plants (most likely low light as they are usually the more hardy beginner friendly plants I think)

    If you want LEDs, I would suggest something along the below lines:

    - A 48 inch long fixture that is also about 6 to 8 inches wide (or wider)
    - Around 30 to 40 1 watt LEDs, either Cree or Apollo. A few more if you think you want more demanding plants in the future
    - Color temp of less than 7000K
    - a mixture of about 50% of the lenses around 40 to 60 degrees, the rest around 60 to 100 degress
    - add a few red f you want to help the colors in your tank "pop"
    - add a controller to adjust the intensity of the light if you want
    If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

    You can put them in a canopy

    Sorry it took me a second to get back - no there are strip lights and shop lights in the lighting section for $10. I have a 4ft 2 bulb t8 fixture that cost me 11.99 and the bulbs were $5 for a pack of 4 at 6500k

    its a variant of this one: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Commercia...2-27/203725928

    thanks Sandz for your suggestion however a fixture can't be found in Malta .. searched for it but to no luck

    and any led tube i found is less than 14W.

    now I'm waiting for confirmation from this guy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/60W-Plant-Gr...:X:RTQ:US:1123

    We agreed 16 White @ 6500K + 4 Red @ 630nm = 60W in total + heatsink + powerdriver amounting to 30 euros. good deal I guess?

    Anything else I should be aware of?
